Frank Hardy Made My Photographs Two

Pensacola Baseball Players 1958 …

with 12 comments

This is a group  photo that my father made back in 1958.  The old Admiral Mason Ball Park sure had nothing on the new Blue Wahoos stadium … and how about this infield grass?  I doubt that this infield had any sub-surface, drainage run-off system.  And you know, if Jerry Pate had put this grass down,  his days in the turf business would be numbered!  Don’t forget these bleachers … my dad did the photography back then for the Dons as a trade-out for one of their so-called ” boxes “.  I can remember going to the games and sitting in the box and then running around with all the other kids at the game … something a kid never forgets – a real high point!  One thing that this ball park and the new CMP ball park have in common is that they were both built across the street from a sewage plant.  How many of you can remember that sewage plant that was down at the end of 9th Avenue?  Please share any memories that you have of the old Admiral Mason Ball Park … I, for one, would be interested in hearing them!  Thanks for looking …

Update:  After looking at this photo for a while, I believe this is a group of different ball team players from the past and not a group shot of the Dons.  Notice how the players seem to be wearing several different uniforms fro past Pensacola Ball Clubs … Senators, Dons, etc.  Also, these guys look a little too old to be playing everyday.  This could have been a player reunion promotion put on by the Dons, since they were always doing something to fill the stands.  What do you think?

WCOA …

For some reason, I want to say that this photo was taken when WCOA had it’s studio up in the San Carlos Hotel.  But that is pure speculation on my part.  If anyone has a better guess, please let us hear it.  I do know that before WCOA moved to the studio it was in out off of Barrancas Avenue, it was located on the top floor somewhere of the San Carlos.  This looks like it mught fit the decor of the hotel, so that is what I am basing my guess on.  If anyone recognizes any of these people in the photo, please let us know.  Thanks for looking …

Spring Portrait …

This is a portrait that my father made back in the 1960’s … the lighting is what stood out to me in this photograph of a pretty, young girl.  This photo looks as nice today as it was when it was made fifty years ago.  You just can not beat a ” timeless ” portrait like this.  It is a shame that you do not see this classic style of portraiture from photographers these days … a lot of what you see today is a photographer telling their subject to just go over and stand by that wall or just grab a hold of that lamp post and swing out … and look like you are having fun!  Or, let’s just run around and take some pics …  Thanks for looking …

Easter Sunrise Service …

This Easter Sunrise Service was held over at Bayview Park in East Hill.  First Baptist Church was the sponsor this year and I would guess the year to be 1956-57 or 58.  I have several other photos of the speakers and choir on the stage that these people are looking towards.  I will post them when I run across them.  Thanks for looking …

Beauty Contestants at The Casino on Pensacola Beach …

with one comment

This photo of a group of beauty contestants was taken inside the ballroom of the old Casino on Pensacola Beach in the 1950’s.  I can remember the Casino fairly well, but I have only run across one exterior photo.  I do not know who any of these ladies are or what beauty contest it is … could be one sponsored by the Jaycees.  I have run across several negative envelopes that have  ” Jaycee Beauty Contestants ” written on them, but there are no names of the girls in the negatives.  As usual, all comments are appreciated and thanks for looking …

Fisher – Pou Funeral Home …

Fisher – Pou Funeral Home was located down on Wright Street across from First Methodist Church.  This was made back in the 1970’s, if I had to guess.  My father was good friends with all the people who worked there and he used to take me before church started to visit.  I remember him telling me this story about a group of gypsies that had a funeral there for one of the “leaders” of their group.  My father went down to take some photos of all of the floral arraignments surrounding the coffin.  He said right in front of the coffin were two trash cans … one held cold beer and other was for the money that everyone donated to the family of the deceased.  My dad said that after that funeral, alcohol was forbidden inside the funeral … go figure.  As usual, all comments are welcome and thanks for looking.

Hill – Kelly Motor Company …

This business is now called ” Hill – Kelly Dodge ” and I know there are some other car brands associated with this business, but I cannot think of them know.  This photo looks like it was made for a print advertisement … you can tell it was staged and the people look young, so it could have been made for a yearbook ad.  I do not know the location of Hill – Kelly where this was made, but they sure have come a long way from this site … they have a beautiful lot out in Car City now.  Thanks for looking …

Hygeia Bottling Works in Pensacola …

with 10 comments

This was the first Coca-Cola Bottling plant in Pensacola … I posted a view from the road earlier, but I ran across this side view and thought that I would through it up here.  I do not know where this was located, but it is next to some train tracks.  They would be to the left or the back of this building if they were in view.  I think I have a view showing the tracks somewhere, so I will look and see what I can find.  Thanks for looking and as usual, all posts are welcomed …
