Nurses At Sacred Heart Hospital In The 1940’s …

Nurses By Flag_RTP _ SFW

Staying in the 1940’s, I scanned some prints that my father had made at the old Sacred Heart Hospital.  The three that I am posting are ones that I just scanned in the past several days … mostly because they did not require too much Photoshop work to get ready to put up on this site.  This first one has always been interesting to me and for some reason or another I have just never gotten around to scan it.  The next is a group of nurses on the steps out front of the hospital …

Nurses Out Front of Hospital _ RTP _ SFW

Note all of the ivy on the walls out front of the hospital and also notice the round globe lights … I do not think that I have seen these before, maybe I have but I just do not recall at the moment.  The last one is of the nurses in the nursery with a newborn …

Notice the ” S C ” on the nurses pocket that stands for ” Sister’s of Charity “, the order that ran the hospital.  I wish I had more information to share with you about these images, but maybe someone out there might recognize some of the nurses in these photos and know something to share with us.  I will say that these images from the 1940’s and earlier are all prints that I scan … that accounts for the color of the images, which I think is interesting.  I could take the color out in Photoshop, but for some reason I like the color and tone of the images.  I will not necessarily that they have aged this color as much as I believe some where printed on a ” warm ” tone paper.  The images that are more black and white might have been printed on a ” cold ” tone paper.  Thanks for looking and if you know anything about any of these images, please feel free to comment.  Thanks for looking … Frank

Two Nurses Out Front_RTP_16 April 14 SFW

These two nurses are standing out front on the lawn of the old Sacred Heart Hospital …in the background  to the left you see the base of the marble stairs.  As usual, I have no clue who these young ladies are.  I have had this photo lying around for years and have just never posted it for some unknown reason.  If anyone has a clue who these nurses are, please feel free to share it with us.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Building the School of Nursing …

Nurses Building Foundation_SFW_8 Nov 13

This is a photo of the foundation when they were constructing the Sacred Heart School of Nursing in around 1945 or 46.  You cannot tell by looking at the building in the previous post, but the building is built in the shape ” W ” .  This just show the two outer sides … there was another section in the center that housed a small auditorium, or at least it was back then and when it was a school.  You can sort of see where there are extending the center part of the foundation in the photo above.  If anyone remembers the building being built and has any comments along that line, please let us hear from you.  Even if you don’t remember the building being built, but attended nursing school in this building, please let us hear from you, also.  Well, even if you attended the Academy of Arts and Sciences in this building, we would like to hear from you, too.  I ran across some old negatives from my high school days,  and if any of the old alumni would like to see some old Academy photos, let me know and I will clean them up and post them.  Thanks for looking … Frank

Sacred Heart Nurse 1_M Broughton_RTP _SFW

Here are several examples of nurses portraits that my father used to do in the 1950’s and into the 1960’s, before the nursing school closed down on 12th Avenue.  The name on the girl’s dress reads ” Broughton ” .  The girl’s name below I could note read.  I will have to find the negative envelope that these came out of to see if there are names written down .  But that is not my point … I just wanted to post several examples of portraits that my father made of these girls when they graduated.  It isn’t funny how you just say “girls” and don’t think about men being nurses in this era.  I cannot even tell you a date when men started entering the nursing program … maybe one of the viewers to this blog will be able to tell us.  Looking back, after I made that previous statement, I cannot even think back to when I started seeing men working as nurses in the hospitals locally.  Here is the other nurse …

Nursing Group Graduation …

This a photo made at the end of the graduation from Sacred Heart Nursing School which was held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in downtown Pensacola Florida.  The Bishop in the bottom of the photograph is Bishop Toolen from the Diocese in Mobile.  Not one hundred per cent sure on that, but since there was no Pensacola – Tallahassee Diocese at the time this was made, it makes sense to believe that it was him, but as usual, I could be wrong.  This photo was made in the 1940’s sometime, so it might not be too hard to check on.  Thanks for looking …

Nursing School Graduates …

with one comment

The date on this group of Sacred Heart Nursing School graduates was May 7, 1947.  At least I have a date for this group, but I have no names.  I have run across a few of these groups and have set them aside to scan and post.  I plan on doing more of these in the future and I am posting several of this type now.  Thanks for looking …
