Baylen and Government Streets …
This is the corner of Baylen and Government Streets in 1960. In today’s Pensacola News Journal Sunday Edition ( 3 Nov 13 ) the attorney firm that occupies the corner where George’s Grill is located had an ad celebrating their 25 years in business. The ad had a nice photo showing the exterior of their office building. I remember that I had seen this negative years ago and tracked it down and posted it to show how times have changed. This view was made 53 years ago and none of these building are no longer there. The Professional Building was torn down years ago to make way for the new Escambia County Annex building and garage. Next to the Professional Building was Mayes Printing and Office Equipment, which moved out to Car City in the 1980’s ( ? ) , not sure of the date. I do not remember George’s Grill, but I remember Mayes and the Professional Building. Thanks for looking … Frank
Oldsmobile / General Motors Parts Department …
The photo above was from a local Oldsmobile / General Motors car dealership in downtown Pensacola. The photo was made in September of 1948. Notice how the service tech is wearing a lab coat and how clean the parts department was. It looks as if the parts guy was even wearing a tie and might have had on a lab coat, also. If you look toward the back of the frame, you see a ” control center ” made of glass stuck above the cars … to monitor work production, not to catch any service techs goofing-off and not working. Now, this was back in 1948, so I can imagine the customer’s response to a facility such as this. After having dealt with a ” shade-tree ” mechanic, this was like going to a doctor’s office / hospital. I am sure that General Motors had this in mind when they had dealerships convert their service departments into spaces such as this … now when the customer received their bill, they might have to be taken to the emergency room from the sticker shock! Thanks for looking and all comments are welcomed … Frank
Another Paper Machine View …
No information or details on this image other than the obvious … a paper machine. I would guess that it could be one from the Pensacola News Journal that my father had made back in the 1950’s. I have a post somewhere on this blog of a man standing along side of the paper machine showing the scale of the machine. I wish that I had more info, but photos like this have always been interesting to me … I hope some of you out there find this interesting also. The more than anything else, it just shows how far technology has progressed in the last 40 or 50 years. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
Falstaff ….
Falstaff Beer, who can remember it? I can remember that Falstaff used to sponsor professional baseball games back in the 1960’s and I believe that Dizzy Dean and PeeWee Reese were the announcers back in those days. Now I was young back then, but that sounds vaguely familiar to me. I do not know who these men are. Here is one of the delivery men …
I wonder what ever happened to Falstaff beer? Let me know if you know what ever happened to Falstaff beer, or PeeWee or Dizzy … Thanks for looking … Frank
Florida Fixture and Cabinet …
It looks as if business was slow on the cabinet side of the business, the guys would just hammer out a boat or two. Now that is what I call real ingenuity!! The business or the building does not look familiar to me, but I a sure that someone out there will recognize the name or the business or might have even purchased a boat from them. Thanks for looking … Frank
Matchbook Covers …
I found these matchbooks in a plastic bag years ago and just never got around to doing anything with them. This San Carlos Hotel matchbook cover is interesting … it has some type of silver background to it that must have been expensive to print back whenever these were printed. Now the backside …
I am not familiar with either of these two hotels, but they must have been something nice if they were partners with the San Carlos Hotel. Next, is a matchbook cover from the Skylark Lounge that used to be on the corner of Navy Blvd and Pace Blvd. This place was before my time, but I have heard lots of people talk about it and it was not because of the food!
The cover says West Garden, which later became Navy Blvd. This place was directly across from where Mitchell Motors used to be located. The back …
The Continental Room must have been the place to be back in the 1960’s … And like I said, I do not think people went for the sizzling steaks! I usually say at this point to let us hear any from anyone to share your memories of any of these places, but these being hotels and a bar, please remember that I want to keep this family friendly … Thanks for looking and please check back, Frank
Fences, Inc …
I have been busy with other things last month and have not had anything ready to post, so I thought I better get something up before anyone thinks that I run off. This image is one that I found years ago in an envelope with some other random buildings and businesses. They were made for the either the insurer or owner of the buildings, since the name on the envelope did not mean anything to me. The name of the business does not sound familiar to me, but I did not post it for the business … the negative that this scan is from was what impressed me. Mainly how clean and sharp it is. Also, it produced a full ranged tonal print so easily when I printed the negative. I have no idea where this building was located in Pensacola. Any comments are appreciated and thanks for looking … Frank
Rex Theater Concession Stand …
Here is a photo taken at the old Rex Theater in downtown Pensacola of the Concession Stand. Look at those prices … hot dog for 15 cents and 5 cents for a snow cone. Now, I do not think that they even sell hot dogs and I know that you could not get a snow cone. In fact, I cannot even remember the last time I saw hot dogs advertised at a theater’s concession stand. Ten dollars gets a tub of pop corn and a watered down cola … times have sure changed!! I am hoping to do a few changes to this blog and my personal photography blog site, http://frankhardyphotoblog.com/
They are not going to be any major changes, but I hope they are a slight improvement in the way that the blog will be presented to you to view. I am always trying to improve the way these blogs will come across to you. This is only me doing this and I am learning as I fumble along, so I want to give it a more polished look. Thanks again for looking and please check back … Frank
Elebash Jewelers …
Here is a panorama photo made of Elebash’s Jewelery Store in downtown Pensacola. This obviously is the old location that was across the street from where they are located now. I have commented on this Wide-Lux camera in posts before that my father would use to make these panorama images. It was destroyed in the fire and my father never bothered to replace it. I have seen several on Ebay, but they are very expensive and I could never justify buying one … with all of the panorama / stitching software available now, you can make an excellent pano with your iPhone. In fact, I have post a few over on my blog, Frank Hardy Photo Blog, taken at the new Blue Wahoo park and 30A at Seaside ( just go to the search and type in panorama and that should bring up the posts – I can not figure out how to get the link to take you to the exact post, but I will work on it ). Thanks for looking … Frank
Brownsville Cycle Company … Part Two …
Here is one more of the Brownsville Cycle Company. Someone made a comment on the other post I had about this company and said that Brownsville Cycle Company purchased the first Honda Dealership in Pensacola. You see the street marker ( you do not see them much anymore ) that says ” P St “, so this must have been the corner of “P” and Cervantes. The thing that grabs my attention is the … phone booth! I bet you have not seen one of those in years. In fact, I cannot remember the last pay phone that I have seen in months. Tom Thumb on Garcon Point Road removed the one that was located next to the ice machine a year or so ago. I did not realize that until I asked where it went after looking at this photo. I guess that I am not as observant as I thought I was. Anybody know about this turning into the first Honda Dealership, feel free to share more info with us. Thanks again for looking and please check back … Frank
