PHS Twirler …
I have several more of the these twirlers from the Pensacola High School Band of the 1950’s that I put up in the next month or so. I am not sure if she is a band majorette or a baton twirler, but I am sure someone out there will correct me and let me know who this is and the year. Thanks again for looking and please check back … Frank
First Methdist Musicians …
This is a group of musicians from First Methodist Church in downtown Pensacola Florida on Wright Street from the 1950’s. I believe that the organist’s name is Morrison, but I am not positive about that. None of the other musicians look vaguely familiar. Here is one more of the group …
I know that someone out there will see this and let us know who they are, it just might take a little time. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
Clubbs Baseball Team 1957 …
I have quite a few of these negatives from Clubbs Junior High School from back in the 1950’s and I will post more in the future as I clean them up. I have a lot of these type of images showing a few sports teams, the band and several other groups. I cannot believe that so many people see people that they know in these photos and I usually get a pretty good response out of posting them. I was only four when this photo was taken, so obviously no one looks familiar to me. If anyone recognizes any of these athletes, please feel free to comment. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
Doc and Kitty in Front of The Town House Motor Lodge …
This is “Doc” and “Kitty” from the tv show Gunsmoke. They were in town back in the middle 1950’s for the Fiesta. I have posted some other photos of them in earlier posts, but I never could find this image until recently. It was in terrible shape and I had already cleaned it up once before, but I never could find it. So when I ran across this image, I went ahead and cleaned it up … again. This is the only photograph that I can find of the exterior front of the Town House Motor Lodge. The two men in the photo are Lynn Toney on the far right and the man helping Amanda Blake is the owner of the Town House and his last name was Head, but I do not know his first name. The front of the Town House was on Cervantes … you should could not do something like this now on Cervates without risking getting hit or run-over. If anyone had any contact with “Doc” or “Kitty” when they were in town, please share your story with us … I would be interested in hearing them. I have a photo of the two of them holding me up that I will post for a laugh … I cannot remember off the top of my head if I already have, so I will check. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
Update (1/7/14) : Some people say that the man helping Amanda Blake out of the wagon is John R Jones, who at one time was a local politician … I want to say Property Appraiser, but I could be wrong there. I had said that the man was Mr. Head, who owned the Town House Motel with his wife. Personally, I do not care who it is, that is not the reason why I posted the photo. Please remember, this is a blog for photography, not for identifying correctly the individuals shown in the images. If we do, fine, if we do not, fine. Thanks for looking … Frank
Miami Beach From The 1950’s …
This was made back in the 1950’s … I have found several sleeves of these 120 negatives that my father made and I have worked several of them up and posted them earlier. Here are several more that I thought that I would post for your viewing enjoyment. The next show you the ” Colonnades ” Hotel down on Miami Beach. I am not sure if this place is still located on Miami Beach …
Now here is the hotel …
And finally, a view of one of the neighborhoods down in Miami … I can almost see Tubbs and Crocket hanging out on this street waiting for the bad guys to show with the goods ( now don’t say you do not know who Crocket and Tubbs are? ). I caught a Miami Vice on TV Land a while back and I could not get over how dated the show looked. If you look close, I swear you see Tubbs and Crocket in the back of that woody parked in the street. I will post some other photos from Miami later … thanks for looking … Frank
Old Motel Room …
I know nothing about this motel room … have no clue where it was located or when it was taken or for what reason the photo was taken. If I had to guess, I would say the early 1950’s, maybe out west somewhere …. other than that, no clue. I think when I look at an image like this, the first thing that jumps out at me is the window unit … I bet a lot of motels did not have window units back in the early 1950’s and then look at the furniture and also how small the room looks to be. Occasionally I might think about a story to go along with these images and doing something about tying a few of them together somehow, but as you can tell from this blog I am not a writer, so I file that back in the vault somewhere. Thanks for looking and if you have comments, please let me hear them … Frank
Log Truck Accident …
This is an image that is in bad shape and I did not feel like taking the time to work it up, so I just through a texture screen on it and ran it though several filters to give it this look. The sign of the Gulfarium is what really stands out in this image. I would estimate the date to be early 1950’s and I do not know where the location of the accident is. Below is the same image without some of the filters, but with the texture screen to clean up a lot of the negative damage. I like the color over-lay, toned images have always been a favorite of mine. Here is the “straight” image …

Beauty Contest at the Casino on Pensacola Beach …
The negative bag read something like ” JC Beauty Contest at the Casino ” and the date was 1950’s. The “JC” was the Junior Chamber, I believe. I do not know who the girls are or the guy giving the trophy, but he sure is interested in this young lady. Here is one more of the two …
I hope that his wife was not in the audience. The band was ” The Clarence Schenk Orchestra “. Here are the runners up …
I do not have any names for the young ladies, but the last one looks vaguely familiar to me. The last photo is of the three winners …
These are three cute girls or should I say ” ladies ” …. I do not want to come across as sexist or anything in this political correct society that we live in today. I wish that I had some photos of the outside of the Casino, but I have yet to run across any. If anyone happened to be at this beauty contest, let’s hear from you. I am curious who these beauty queens are. Thanks for looking and please check back …. Frank
Cordova Park 1959 …
Here are some more panorama prints that I have stumbled across recently. I believe this is the house that was next to our house at 3715 Dunwoody Drive. If you look real close, you will see a boy standing on the back porch … that was me. I was 5 at the time this photo was taken. Our house was built next door to the left of this house. Dunwoody at this point was still a dirt road. The next photo shows Gerhardt Drive, one block to the north of this photo … it was paved. Here is a photo showing Mr. Lautner in front of a home he had built on Gerhardt …
Mr. Lautner was the man who built my parent’s house on Dunwoody. Gerhardt is one block off of Bayou Blvd and was paved at this time … for some reason, I do not believed that Bayou Blvd was paved at the time this photo was taken. You turned into Cordova Park off of 12th Avenue back in these days. 12th Avenue was paved and took you to the airport. There was no Airport Blvd or PSC Blvd in 1959, so 12th Avenue became a dead-end at the National Guard Amory. You turned right and you were in the airport parking lot. Well, that is your Pensacola history lesson for the day … no quiz on this stuff, so don’t worry. If anyone ever runs across any old photos of Cordova Park or of the Pensacola Airport from back in the late 1950’s or 1960’s, please let me know because I would love to see them. Even old snapshots that someone in your family made … they do not have in great shape, just clear mostly. Let me hear from you and thanks again for looking … Frank
