Paper Machine Close-Up …

with 8 comments

This is a close-up of a paper machine that my father made back in the 1950’s.  I do not know if this was made at the St. Regis Paper Mill or not.  The only two places that used rolls of paper this large was St. Regis, which was a paper mill that manufactured paper or the Pensacola News Journal, which used rolls this large to print their newspapers with.  Anyway, I have always been attracted to large machinery for all the photographic possibilities they present.  They almost appear abstract when you take a small area of this huge machine and concentrate your photograph it.  I found a negative envelope that has 10 or sh 4×5 negatives of the paper machine and this is the most interesting to me.  Maybe at a later date I will work -up a few and post them.  Now, when you see machinery like this, you know that it is operated by computers and high technology.  Back in the 50’s, all you had was a panel with several gauges, a couple of nobs and buttons, a maybe, just maybe, a light or two… one being red that you hoped never came on!

That is about it for now.  Please let us hear from you, all comments are appreciated.  I know people are looking from the stats listing on my WordPress dashboard, so please do not be shy.  Thanks again for looking …

Leaving on a Jet Plane …

with 4 comments

This was the “Main Gate” at the old terminal at Pensacola Airport back in the 1950’s through the 70’s.  I can remember this very vividly.  I wish I had some photos of the interior of the airport to share with everyone.  If anyone has any, please feel free to email them to me and I would be happy to share them with you.  This is a new post from this wedding … I posted a photo of this couple standing at the back of the plane on the old site, so I will find it and post it later.  Thanks for looking …

By the way, I believe that the old airport was named ” Haigler Field ” after our state legislator, Jack Haigler.  If I am wrong on this, please correct me.  I did not think of it until after I had written the top part and was getting ready to post this.

A Few More From The Suter School Play …

leave a comment »

Here are two more photos that I had worked up and had not posted yet from the Suter School play.  I do not know if this play was called – Around The World or if that was just the name of the hot air balloon.  These carnival plays / pageants must have been popular in the 1950’s, because I have found several negative envelopes from Clubb’s junior high school, also.  A good friend of mine mentioned to me that her sister was crowned ” Queen of Clubb’s ” at one of the pageants and I happened to find a photo of her being crowned.  Here is one more below …

I will hunt down those other negative envelopes containing Suter School plays and let you know in a future post what they are and from what year.  One lady commented and asked me if I have any from a ” Peter Rabbit ” play and I told her that I was not sure what the negatives were from, but I would find them and let her know.  Thanks everyone for looking and all comments are welcomed …

Roger Scott …

with 15 comments

This is a portrait of Roger Scott that my father made back in the 1950’s.  I believe that Mr. Scott ran the Parks and Leisure Services Department for the City of Pensacola for many years.  The City’s Tennis Center on Summit Blvd. is named for him.  He was way before my time and I know nothing at all about him.  Nice portrait of him at his desk.

As usual, all and any comments are appreciated and welcomed.  Thanks again for looking …

More John Wayne Photos …

with 5 comments

Below are some photos that my father had of  John Wayne.  Now, as usual, I know nothing about the photos – the date, the people in the photos, etc, etc.  They obviously were made on an aircraft carrier, which one, I do not know.  There was an aircraft carrier, the Antietam, that was stationed in Pensacola at the time and I believe that it was shown at the start of the movie, The Wing’s of Eagles, but I am not sure.  We rented the movie years ago and watched it, but to me, it was a very depressing story and the movie seemed to drag.  The part showing Pensacola was the best part and it was only in the first 15 minutes or so of the film.  All that being said … these photos are interesting and I have never seen them anywhere else, so I hope you enjoy them.

Like I said earlier, my father did not take these … I can only assume that these were the ones that John Wayne would have sent them.  Knowing my dad, he was not a collector of photographs of other people, so unless they were sent them to him , he would not have gone out and got them.  If anyone knows anything about these photos, please let us hear from you … Thanks again for looking …

Sam Huff …

This is one of my dad and the legendary football player, Sam Huff.  He looks just like an average joe here, but he had a reputation as one of the fiercest, most physical player to play the game of football.  There was a photo of him in Sports Illustrated in the last year … you sure would not want to line up across from line!  If anyone remembers what he was doing here in Pensacola back in the 1950’s, please share it with us.  Thanks for looking …

Hill – Kelly Motor Company …

with 6 comments

This business is now called ” Hill – Kelly Dodge ” and I know there are some other car brands associated with this business, but I cannot think of them know.  This photo looks like it was made for a print advertisement … you can tell it was staged and the people look young, so it could have been made for a yearbook ad.  I do not know the location of Hill – Kelly where this was made, but they sure have come a long way from this site … they have a beautiful lot out in Car City now.  Thanks for looking …

More East Hill iin Snow …

with 4 comments

This is the park located at 12th Avenue and Gonzalez Street covered in snow.  This view is looking east across the park towards the shops on 12th Avenue.  For some reason, I believe the name of this park is called, ” Cordova Park “.  The photo below is of a house located somewhere in East Hill, but I have no idea where.

The house looks familiar and I am sure that whom ever lived in the house were friends of my fathers’.  I know I have seen the house, but I just cannot seem to place where it is.  As always, all comments are welcomed and appreciated.  Thanks for looking …

Cochise at the Geronimo Sign in Pensacola …

leave a comment »

Here is Michael Ansara as ” Cochise ” standing in front of a Geronimo sign the State of Florida dedicated back in the 1950’s when he came to Pensacola back in the 1950’s.  I am sure that the “political correctness” crowd would hysterical now if this was to happen.  Mr Ansara must have been a good sport about all of this … the photos I have posted of him in the past has him signing autographs and he is smiling in all the photos.  If anyone was around at the time he visited and remembers seeing ” Cochise ” around town and spoke with him. we would love to hear from you … Thanks again for looking

Navy Point Stores …

with 15 comments

This building has been torn down now.  The lady that used to run the camera store here was named Mrs. Gossage and she also ran the photo exhibit at the Pensacola Interstate Fair for many, many years.  She and my dad were very good friends and I know that he bought a lot of his cameras from her back in the 1940’s and 1950’s.  I am not sure when the business was closed down and I did not know that the building had been torn down until Pam and I drove by several weeks ago.  Anyone wishing to share their memories of the Navy Point Store or of the Navy Point area in general, please be my guest and thanks again for looking … Frank
