Brenda Lee in Pensacola …
When my dad made this photo of Brenda Lee, she was 14 at the time and had her first number one record on the radio. I do not know what radio station this was taken at, but it was probably either WCOA or WBSR. The lady that is interviewing Miss Lee asked to be cropped out of this photo, since she says that she is a private person and I sure do not want to offend anyone with their presence on this blog if they wish not to be on here. I am not sure if Miss Lee gave a concert down at the Municipal Auditorium or anywhere else … if anyone knows whether or not she performed while she was in the area, please let us know. Thanks for looking …
The Coca-Cola Show at WEAR …
These are all new images from the ” Coca – Cola Show ” that was broadcast from WEAR Channel 3 back in the 1950’s. I ran across them years ago, but they were in such bad condition, I kept putting them aside. So, several weeks ago I started working on them and have gotten a few ready to post here. I do not know who any of the people are, as usual, but to look at how far television technology is come is interesting … the guy behind the TV camera looks to have a pie plate or a hub-cap attached to this camera stand for some reason. Notice that he has his coffee cup attached to a plate on the tripod in case he gets thirsty and needs a drink. The lady on the right looks vaguely familiar … but I can not put a name to her.
A little musical interlude …
Before we bring out the dancing girls. I would guess that these girls are from some local high school dance ensemble, maybe Escambia since it is out on that side of town. Well, at least it is either Escambia, Pensacola or Tate High Schools since they were the only white high schools in Pensacola back in the 1950’s. So, at least I have a 33.33% of being correct! Here is another photo …
This looks as if it might be some type of skit … that looks like some guy dressed up like a girl on the right. One thing you can say about WEAR is that they never skimped on set decorations. The card table sort of looks new, well maybe at least it looks as if it was bought in the 50’s and not World War II salvage. I really hope that someone from WEAR sees these and might offer some insight into when this show might have run and who some of the people are in these photos. I have some more photographs from the Jarrard Motors Show that was broadcast from out there at Channel 3 from around this time. That show was really high tech … they had a chalk board for car prices!! As always, all comments are welcomed. Thanks again for looking …
Beach Beauty …
I am not sure of this lady’s name, so I am not going to mention it. My dad used to do a lot of these type photos for the beauty contests that they used to stage at the Casino on Pensacola Beach. I have some photos that I posted on the old site that I will find and post so you can see what I am talking about. Thanks for looking …
Santa Rosa Court House …
This is the old Santa Rosa Court House over in Milton Florida. This was before my time, so I have nothing to offer. This is from a set of photographs that my father made in the 1950’s, when then Gov. Dan McCarty was in office. He was only governor for 6 months or so because he died a natural death in office. I am working on getting those negatives worked up and I will post them in the near future. Thanks for looking …
Paper Machine From the 1950’s …
This was made back in the 1950’s, or it could have the 1940’s, but I am going to say the 50’s. It is a newspaper printing machine, I believe. This could have been made down at the Pensacola News Journal printing plant in downtown Pensacola. I am sorry that I do not have any “real” information on this photo, but if anyone can enlighten us, be our guest. Thanks for looking …
The Holland Hotel in Alpine Texas …
This is one from the old site. My father used to drive out Hwy 90 to visit his sister in Los Angeles in the 1940’s. This hotel is in Alpine Texas. I never could figure out why he might have been in Alpine Texas until I looked at a road atlas and saw that Hwy 90 ran through this town. Can you imagine driving from Pensacola to LA on a two lane highway? Welcome to road travel before the interstate! I personally have a hard time imagining driving for more than several hundred miles on county roads before I have to jump back on the interstate. I like the backroads, but after 3 or 4 hours of 50 mph, I get a little bored and have to jump back on the big ” I ” . All comments are welcomed … thanks for looking ,,,
Palafox Street around 1925 …
This is Palafox Street looking north from around Wright Street. The building that you see up on the right side about a block used to be the old YMCA building. The hill looks a lot steeper today than it did back around 1924 or 1925 when this photograph was made. This is one that someone had brought to me to copy and I saved a negative for myself. I have no idea who the photographer was since there were no markings on the print. Notice that the street was paved with bricks. You can barely make out the Confederate Monument at the top of the hill.
NOTE: If you click on the photograph, it will open up on it’s own page. I uploaded this image as an 8×10, so you can see all the detail in the print. The majority of the images I upload are sized as 4×5’s and are low resolution for the web. This image is a much larger file, however it took a while for it to upload and is a large file … too large really for the internet, since it takes longer for it to load. I thought I would just let you know, in case you never bother to click on the image to see it enlarged. Thanks … Frank
Waters & Hibbert Funeral Home …
Waters and Hibbert Funeral Home is still located down at the corner of Gregory and Spring Streets. This was made sometime in the 1950’s … back when the Greyhound Bus Station was next door on the corner of Gregory and Baylen Streets. I have a photo that I made of the Bus Station in the 1970’s somewhere around here that I will find, so that you will have a better idea of the location. Thanks for looking …
