The Holland Hotel in Alpine Texas …

with 4 comments

This is one from the old site.  My father used to drive out Hwy 90 to visit his sister in Los Angeles in the 1940’s.  This hotel is in Alpine Texas.  I never could figure out why he might have been in Alpine Texas until I looked at a road atlas and saw that Hwy 90 ran through this town.  Can you imagine driving from Pensacola to LA on a two lane highway?   Welcome to road travel before the interstate!  I personally have a hard time imagining driving for more than several hundred miles on county roads before I have to jump back on the interstate.  I like the backroads, but after 3 or 4 hours of 50 mph, I get a little bored and have to jump back on the big ” I ” .   All comments are welcomed … thanks for looking ,,,

  1. The roads were rather long and lonely way out there around Alpine. Getting across Texas even today by car is a task even by interstate..

    • I never could figure out why my father would have been in Alpine Texas until I looked at a road map … The only way to get to California from Florida back in the 1940’s was to get on US90. US90 just happened to go through Alpine Texas. You think driving across I-10 is long, think about taking a two lane road like US90 across the state. I bet that it would take three days at least. Thanks for the comment … Frank

  2. Frank, talked to my sister in law and she told me this hotel is still a working hotel and she doesn’t think anything on it has changed. I used to work next door to your studio @ Griffith Equipment in the mid 90’s. Sorry to hear about your dad. He was a really nice guy!

    • Mike … Thank you for commenting about the Alpine Hotel. I never could figure out why my father had a photo of this hotel, until I looked a road map and saw that Hwy 98 ran through the town and that was the road you took to get out to Southern California before the Interstate was built. Could you imagine driving it now out west … it would take you a week to get to LA. I am sure I would remember you you if I saw you … you know Bob died several years ago. I lost touch with him when I moved out in May of 1998 … he was a nice person. I often have wondered what ever happened to Brenda? Thank you again for commenting and please check back … Frank
