Taylor Hardware …

Not exactly sure where this store was located, but I am sure that it was located in downtown Pensacola.  For some reason I want to say it is Garden and Jefferson Street, but that is only a guess.   If anyone has a clue, please let us know.  Thanks for looking …

Ted Weems …

with 4 comments

Ted Weems was a big band leader from Dallas Texas back in the 1950’s and 60’s.  This photo was made in the stairwell at the Town House Motor Lodge that I have mentioned in earlier posts.  You can see other photos of John Wayne, “Doc and Kitty” from the tv show Gunsmoke and others on the wall in back of him.  The photo above had been on the old site … the photo below is one that I have just recently come across and worked up.  It was made in the dining room of the Town House.

I do not know any of the details of why he was here at this time.  If anyone remembers anything about his visit to Pensacola or the exact time, please let us know.   Thanks for looking …

Liberace Arriving in Pensacola …

with 24 comments

This is Liberace arriving in Pensacola back in the 1960’s.  He used to come to Pensacola to buy antiques from several dealers in the area.  One of them was my father’s friend, Ada Wilson, who would always tell my dad when Liberace was coming to town so that he could take some photos of him.  I will share a story  that my father shared with Liberace about seeing him in Chicago in the late 1930’s when I have more time.  Thanks for looking …

The Hair – O – Plane …

leave a comment »

” Excuse me Miss … that is a very attractive airplane you are wearing today on your head. ”

” Why, thank you sir … it is the newest rage in Pensacola Florida.  It is called the Hair-O-Plane and the stews on Eastern Airlines are all wearing them.  I thought that if I were to where one, I might be hired by Eastern Airlines … that is my dream job!  Just think of all the celebrities you get to meet in the friendly skies. ”

Obviously, that is just me trying to be funny, but you really have to wonder what someone was thinking when  the Hair-O-Plane was created.  Eastern Airlines must have put on a fashion show and this could have been the highlight of the show.  The background is the San Carlos Hotel for both of  these photographs.  I wish I knew something about the photos … who the model is, did she get to wear the Hair-O-Plane home, did she get paid or did she have to pay them, and who the hair stylist / airplane designer was … did she or he go on to a famous career out in Hollywood or did their career  ” crash and burn ” with the Hair-O-Plane. Inquiring minds want to know!   Here is the other photo …

If anyone knows the answers to any of the before mentioned questions, please share them with us.  When I posted them on the other site I do not believe that I received one comment.  I was sure that someone would have made some type of remark about the Hair-O-Plane.  I surely thought that there would have been a couple of Eastern Airline Stews from the 1960’s that were just dying to share their stories with this fashion statement.  So please do not be shy, no one here is out to judge or make fun of your sense of style.  Thanks for looking …

Cochise at Sacred Heart Hospital …

with 11 comments

Since is another of ” Cochise ” when he visited Pensacola many years ago.  Here he is at the old Sacred Heart Hospital with a group of nurses.  It looks as if these girls might have been collecting money for something … I think these are Golden Bear Ice Creme containers.  You have to admit one thing … Michael Ansara ” Cochise ” was sure a good sport!  He really seems to be enjoying himself in the photos that my father made of him.  If anyone remembers when he was here and met him, I would be interested in hearing what you have to say and I am sure there are a lot of others too.  I will post some other photos of him later.  Thanks for looking …

Pensacola Regional Airport Guests …

leave a comment »

No clue who most of these people are … I believe that the man closest to the plane was our Mayor at the time – Barney Burks, but I could be wrong about that.  Whoever these people are, they must have been some VIP’s.  These photos are not really about these people, but about our airport at the time.  Next is a photo of the plane out on the tarmac …

The only markings that identify the plane is the ” Pensacola, Florida ” on the side, so maybe this was a private plane owned by a company or business.  I doubt that the City of Pensacola ever owned a private plan, but you never can tell with Pensacola or for that matter Escambia County.  The next photo is my favorite …

I can remember these covered walk-ways that led you into the terminal … there were only two or three of these walk-ways.  I have some other photos of the airport that I will post in the future.  If anyone recognizes any of these people, please let us know who you think they are.  Thanks for looking …

The ” Round – House ” on Bayou Texar …

with 10 comments

This is another photograph my dad made with the panoramic camera he owned – The WideLux.  This house is still located on Bayou Texar, but I have no idea who lives in it today.  The Lautner family used to live here back in the 1950’s and 60’s.  Mr. Lautner was the builder of our house on Dunwoody Drive, which is just two blocks up from this house.  I found some other images my dad made with the WideLux from this boat trip that I will post later.  Note how there was a train track that would take their boat back and forth from Bayou Texar.  I can not remember if it was motorized or if there was a pulley system to take the boat back and forth to the ” Round – House “, but whatever there was it left an impression on me.  Thanks for looking …

Jimmy Cagney In Pensacola …

with 2 comments

Back in the ” good old days ” the Fiesta used to bring in celebrities to be in their parades and that is what I think ( not positive ) Jimmy Cagney was here for.  I do not think he was here for the making of a movie, but I could be wrong.  This is the corner of Palafox and Gregory Streets … you can see the drug store that was on corner and I cannot remember the name for the life of me.  If anyone was at the parade and remembers Jimmy, please let us hear from you.  Thanks for looking …

Brooks Thornton Florist …

with 2 comments

This florist was on the corner of 12th Avenue and Cervantes Street.  Another florist is now in it’s place and I believe the green house is still in use.  The tree is long gone, but I can remember it being decorated for Christmas as a kid.  We lived in a garage apartment about two blocks away on Cervantes.  We lived there for 5 or 6 years until we moved to Cordova Park.  In fact, the garage apartment is still there on Cervantes between 13th and 14th Avenue.  One day I might have to drop by and knock on the door.  Thanks for looking …

Bi – Planes Over San Francisco and The Golden Gate Bridge …

leave a comment »

This is a photograph someone brought to me twenty years or so ago for a copy job.  Usually I never bothered to save these copy jobs, but this was one that I thought was really interesting, so I made me a copy negative and put it away.  I do not know the year and I cannot remember anything about the person that brought it in.  I do not think that I have ever seen a photo that contains so many bi-planes in one image before.  I posted this on the old site and I did not get one comment from anyone, which amazed me since I thought someone would run across it and know something about this image.  You know that it had to have been made after 1937 because that was the year that the Golden Gate Bridge was completed … I believe.  You also see that there is hardly anything built were San Francisco is today.  Pam and I flew out to San Francisco back in 2000 and it was one of the most enjoyable trips that we have and we have been on a few.  On my personal blog http://frankhardyphotoblog.com/ , I have posted some b&w images that I made on that trip.  Thanks for looking …
