12TH Avenue in Snow … February 1956 or 1957 …
This photo was made in front my father’s old studio on 12th Avenue back when it snowed in February, back in the late 1950’s … maybe 1956 or 57, I am not really sure. You can see the old Moulton’s Drug Store in the distance … this really takes me back, I can still see this scene as if it was yesterday. This little shopping area was always busy and 12th Avenue always had a lot of traffic. Then when Friendly Service and Winn-Dixie closed down, this whole area became a ghost-town in the early 1980’s for 5 or 6 years. Thanks for looking … Frank
Mr. Wentworth and Students …
This is Mr. Wentworth talking to several local high school students. I do not recognize the students or the setting. I remember my father remarking several times how Mr. Wentworth would spend time with high school students that would show interest in local history. Notice the dagger or cross on his desk that he used for a paper weight … I can assure you that having something like that on your desk today would be politically incorrect, especially if you were a teacher in the school system in 2013!! That would just be an invitation for a student to pick it up and stab a fellow inmate … I mean student. Thanks for looking and let us hear your comments … Frank
Wedding Photos …
Here are several wedding photos … the one above was taken at Sacred Heart Church on 12th Avenue in the 1950’s and the one below, I am not sure where it was taken …
The staircase does not look familiar to me, so if anyone out there recognizes the place, please share it with us. I have a lot of these wedding photos from the 1950’s and 1960’s that I plan to share with you in the future. Thanks for looking … Frank
Suter School Play …
Here are a few more from the Suter School play ” Around the World” …
I have a few of these all worked up and ready to post. Since I have worked up so many of these photos, I just thought that I would drag them out and make several posts out of all of them. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
PHS Cheerleaders 1956 …
I found this recently and thought I would post it. I have several others of this group that I will clean-up and post later. I see one girl that looks familiar, but I cannot recall her name. Maybe some of you out there will recognize some of these cheerleaders and can identify them. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
Fiesta Parade 1956 …
These are from the Fiesta Parade of 1956. I do not have any comments about any of these … they are pretty much self – explanatory. The first photo below is of the car carrying the Governor of Florida at the time – LeRoy Collins. There is a photo of him in an earlier post and it might have been taken before the parade started …
I think that there are 16 photos in this post and I believe that I broke it up on the other blog that I had, but since I did not have any comments or information about any of these images … I just decided to post them all. If anyone recognizes any of these groups or people, please let us hear from you. Thanks for looking … Frank
Nuns in Study …
I believe that this was made at the Sacred Heart Church…not sure if it was in the school part or the fellowship hall. I doubt that the building was air conditioned when this photo was taken, so you know it would have been warm in this room. Even if it was in the winter and the heat was on, you know that wearing this “habit” had to have been uncomfortable . The head pieces looked uncomfortable and to wear them all day really look restrictive. Some one told me that the nuns habits were made of wool and they wore the same habit for winter and summer back in the 1950’s and 60’s. Thanks for looking … Frank
Pure Oil Stations …
How many of you can remember going to a ” Filling Station ” and having someone come out to your car to ” service ” your car? And be happy to do it! I do not recognize any of these ” attendants ” or the stations were they are working. These photos were made back in the 1950’s and I did not start driving until 1969, but I can still remember going to service stations. I do not think that they were phased out until sometime in the late 1970’s and maybe up until the mid-1980’s, when everything became ” self-serve “. This FHP patrolman looks like a nice guy … I bet he would let you off with a “warning”, something that the FHP patrolman now seem to have never heard of. A speeding ticket back in the 1950’s most likely only ran $25 or so, now, you are looking at upwards of $200 or more.
The sign on the wall says C.E. Bowden and that name does not register anything to me. The area next to his building looks like a row of buildings that you might find in some of the rural towns around the Florida Panhandle back in the 1950’s. I am thinking Marianna, Chipley, Milton … some little town off of Highway 90.
This looks more like it could have been made around Pensacola. The lady looks happy … to be riding around in a car with no air conditioning and a car full of kids … in the summer. My how times have changed. She is a soccer mom and she does not even know it! I have a few more of these negatives that I will post in the future. Times were much simpler then … how many times have you heard that before? Thanks for looking and let us hear what you think … Frank
Pensacola Dons Players …
I have a few of the Don’s here that I have worked up … this player was named Robbins and that is all I know. I think that it is good action photo and I enjoy looking at all of the business’ signs on the back fence.
This player’s name is Moore … they sure did not spare the resin on the bag. I cannot remember ever seeing this much resin on a bag. Maybe they just over did it for the photo, but this is a nice photo of the guy stretching out waiting for a ground ball.
This player’s name was Whitehead and they did not spare the resin on this bag, either. That is all of Don’s that I have worked up. I hope this brings back some fond memories and just think, spring training is just around the corner … sort of. Thanks for looking and let me know if you recognize or remember any of these players … Frank
