Old Sacred Heart Hospital Nursing School …

Nuns in Front ofNurses Home 2 _ RTP _SFW

This building on 12th Avenue used to be the home of the old Sacred Heart Hospital Nursing School.  I am not sure of the years that it was built and was the school and home for the nurses of Sacred Heart Hospital.  From 1969 until around 1979, it was the home of the Academy of Arts and Sciences … this was were I went to high school for 10th, 11th and 12th grades and graduated in 1971.  I believe there were 55 kids in my class.  If you look real close you will see three nuns and two nurses in this photo, which was made sometime in the 1950’s, I would guess.  I have posted a view from the other side earlier, but this is the first from the south end looking north.  If you happen to know the years when this was the nursing school, please let us know … Thanks for looking … Frank

Televison Back in the 1950’s …

Yes, kiddies this TV back in dark ages … And Yes, all we had back in the 50’s was three (3) channels.  No, we did not have cable back then and no, this color has not been taken out of these images.   That is my little toy sitting on top of the TV, not some  futuristic antennae.   That is Bob Hope on the screen, but I do not have a clue who the lady with him is or what show this is, either.  Below is another screen shot …

I do know that this is Bing Crosby and Bob Hope on some type of variety show.    This had to be around 1956-59 and  I am sure this was the first TV that my parents had ever purchased.  I have another photo of me sitting in front of this TV and I will find it and post it.  At this time we were living in a garage apartment on Cervantes between 13th and 14th Avenues.  In fact, the apartment is still there and I pass by it all the time.  Some day I might just have to stop by and see if they will let me stick my head in the door for old times sake.  Thanks for looking … Frank

Chapel in the Old Sacred Heart Hospital …

with 7 comments

This is still one of my favorite images from the old hospital.  I ran it through a filter … Lucis Art Filter … and this filter really brings out the detail in images.  Just look at the altar and all of the trim around the ceiling.  Believe it or not, I can still remember this chapel in the old hospital.  The room itself was not very large, maybe 15 x30 feet.  I have several prints of this in the works right now … check back with me later and I will let you know how and where you can view them.  If any of you remember this chapel in the old hospital, let us hear from you.  Thanks for looking … Frank

Johnson’s Barber Shop …

with 4 comments

Someone had made a comment earlier about Johnson’s Barber Shop,  that was one of the shops at the corner of 12th Avenue and Gonzalez Street and I dug this one out.  This is me getting a hair cut by either Mr. Johnson or Mr. Helms … I do not know which one.  This is not my first hair-cut because I was really crying in that photo.  I have it somewhere around here and I will post it when I find it … everyone will get a good laugh, because I am really crying!!  You would think I am really in pain or was being beaten.  Notice the board that they have me sitting on…how many of you there ever sat on this board and had your hair cut?  I bet quite a few of you readers out there.   Also, look at the reflections in the mirror … they must have been very busy on this day.  Thanks for looking … Frank

One More From 12th and Gonzalez Streets …

with 22 comments

This is one more panorama made with the Wide-Lux 120 that my father owned.  This is from the diagonal of the last pano showing Ginn’s and Kwik Chek on the south side of Gonzalez and 12th.  The signs on the building say ” Shaws ” and ” M&M Hardware and Fishing Tackle ” .  The business at the left end of the building was  ” Friendly Service “.  They had a deli that made sandwiches and had cold salads like potato salad, cole slaw, etc.  They even had a hot bar that had meat loaf, cabbage, navy beans and the like.  That business I remember very well because it did not close until the early 1980’s.  This photo was made in the mid-1950’s, so you see that 12th Avenue was stilled paved with bricks.

Anybody out there that wants to share their memories of Friendly Service, Shaw’s or M&M Hardware and Fishing … please let us hear.  I will ask you to refrain from talking about one item from Friendly Service … their meat-loaf sandwiches.  To this day, that has to be my all-time favorite sandwich and I have never had one ( except from home ) that has been that tasty or delicious.  Thanks again for looking and let us hear your comments.

Ginn’s Restaurant …

This is the corner of 12th Avenue and Gonzalez Street, somewhere around 1956 or 7.  This is where I spent the first 20 something years of my life … anyone that is familiar with my father’s studio knew that it was located just down from that Cadillac parked on the left side of this image.  I have a photo showing the other side of the street that I am working on that I will most in the next day or so.  I know I have posted several photos of this corner in the past, so if you are curious, just search  ” 12th Avenue ” and see what pops up.  Thanks for looking …

Bayview Park …

with 4 comments

This photo above of Bayview Park must have been made in the early 1900’s, maybe around 1910 or so.  My father obviously did not make this photo, but he had a negative of the image.  Someone must have brought the photo into the studio and had a copy print made.  I have not seen very photos of the old Bayview Park and I thought that it looked interesting.  Notice the old Model A’s in the parking lot on the left hand side.  I can remember my father talking about going swimming there at Bayview Park when they moved here in 1925 from Muscogee Florida.  All comments are appreciated … Thanks for looking …

Easter Sunrise Service …

leave a comment »

This Easter Sunrise Service was held over at Bayview Park in East Hill.  First Baptist Church was the sponsor this year and I would guess the year to be 1956-57 or 58.  I have several other photos of the speakers and choir on the stage that these people are looking towards.  I will post them when I run across them.  Thanks for looking …

More East Hill iin Snow …

with 4 comments

This is the park located at 12th Avenue and Gonzalez Street covered in snow.  This view is looking east across the park towards the shops on 12th Avenue.  For some reason, I believe the name of this park is called, ” Cordova Park “.  The photo below is of a house located somewhere in East Hill, but I have no idea where.

The house looks familiar and I am sure that whom ever lived in the house were friends of my fathers’.  I know I have seen the house, but I just cannot seem to place where it is.  As always, all comments are welcomed and appreciated.  Thanks for looking …
