Group at old Sacred Heart Hospital …
This group has nurses, nuns and ” Waves / Wacs ” ( not really sure ) in it, so this photo must have been made during WW II. You see the Red Cross flag pinned-up to the wall in the background, so maybe this was some type of enlistment / recruitment meeting. I just thought it was an interesting photo. Thanks for looking …
Nursing Group Graduation …
This a photo made at the end of the graduation from Sacred Heart Nursing School which was held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in downtown Pensacola Florida. The Bishop in the bottom of the photograph is Bishop Toolen from the Diocese in Mobile. Not one hundred per cent sure on that, but since there was no Pensacola – Tallahassee Diocese at the time this was made, it makes sense to believe that it was him, but as usual, I could be wrong. This photo was made in the 1940’s sometime, so it might not be too hard to check on. Thanks for looking …
Nursing School Graduates …
The date on this group of Sacred Heart Nursing School graduates was May 7, 1947. At least I have a date for this group, but I have no names. I have run across a few of these groups and have set them aside to scan and post. I plan on doing more of these in the future and I am posting several of this type now. Thanks for looking …
Sacred Heart Nursing School …
This photo was taken on the steps of the old Sacred Heart Nursing School which is now owned by the accounting firm of Saltmarsh, Cleveland and Gunn. That is about all for this one … not sure the date or any of the ladies in the photograph. As usual, all comments are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks for looking …
Navy Point Stores …
This building has been torn down now. The lady that used to run the camera store here was named Mrs. Gossage and she also ran the photo exhibit at the Pensacola Interstate Fair for many, many years. She and my dad were very good friends and I know that he bought a lot of his cameras from her back in the 1940’s and 1950’s. I am not sure when the business was closed down and I did not know that the building had been torn down until Pam and I drove by several weeks ago. Anyone wishing to share their memories of the Navy Point Store or of the Navy Point area in general, please be my guest and thanks again for looking … Frank
Los Angeles City Hall …
This image of the City Hall in Los Angeles was made back in the 1940’s, on one of my dad’s trips out west to visit his sister who was a nurse in Los Angeles. I still have a few of these negatives from his trips out west that I plan on posting in the future. An interesting side note about this building … if you travel to Baton Rouge Louisiana, you will see a building similar to this structure. Governor Huey Long had been out to LA and was so fascinated with this building that he built an exact replica for the state capital in Baton Rouge. But the more remarkable thing was that he built the Louisiana Capital building in less that two years! I picked up a flyer telling about the history of the building that I will find and post some more info later. Thanks for looking …
Pensacola High School …
I ran across this hand-colored postcard of the old Pensacola High School that was located off Palafox Street recently and thought that it was an interesting image. I do not know who made the image, but since I have a few images that where made in front of the school, I just thought it would be interesting to show a photo of the school. I know that the majorette photo was made on the front steps and I believe a band photo was made there. Thanks for looking …
The ” Milk Bottle ” …
I can remember my dad taking us the Milk Bottle many a nights for ice creme when I was young. It was located where the parking lot across the Pensacola Civic Center is now located. I think that would be the corner of Davis and Gregory Streets. I do not remember ever going inside and eating … I can only remember driving up in the car and I believe someone came out and took your order. And I do not think that they were on roller skates! Let us hear your memories from the Milk Bottle … thanks for looking.
The Holland Hotel in Alpine Texas …
This is one from the old site. My father used to drive out Hwy 90 to visit his sister in Los Angeles in the 1940’s. This hotel is in Alpine Texas. I never could figure out why he might have been in Alpine Texas until I looked at a road atlas and saw that Hwy 90 ran through this town. Can you imagine driving from Pensacola to LA on a two lane highway? Welcome to road travel before the interstate! I personally have a hard time imagining driving for more than several hundred miles on county roads before I have to jump back on the interstate. I like the backroads, but after 3 or 4 hours of 50 mph, I get a little bored and have to jump back on the big ” I ” . All comments are welcomed … thanks for looking ,,,
