Pensacola High School Basketball Team …
I do not know what year, maybe late 1950’s or early 1960 or 61, and I do not know if this is the varsity or the junior varsity, but someone will know. One more group …
This group does look a little younger, so this must be the junior varsity. Now, a couple in the PHS gym. You know that it was not air conditioned and how these kids practiced in the summer without passing out was a miracle.
And here is another in the gym …
I can remember going with my father to the gym during the summer and he would be photographing the seniors for the coming year in the gym. It was hot, but I do not remember anyone passing out because of the heat or complaining too much. But times where different and nobody had air conditioning in their cars or homes in the early 1960’s or late 1950’s. I cannot even remember when air conditioning became come place, but I know that the high school I went to in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s did not have central air conditioning. Maybe a room or two had a window unit, but that was it. I did not mean to ramble on about the air conditioning … Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
The first photo is very probably the 59-60 varsity. No. 44 is Gene McCutcheon. No. 40 is Larry Bulger. Bulger went on to play for PJC and Florida State. He died at age 40 after heart bypass surgery. No. 43 is Larry Foxworth. Bill Kreitlein, Class of ’59.

Thanks for the ids on the players. I have several more from this time period that I will post later. In fact I think I have several from the PHS-Escambia basketball game from this era. I will look for them later and see what kind of shape they are in. Thanks for the help Bill …Frank

Not air conditioned…boy, was that the truth! I was at PHS 1972-74, and I seem to remember that the office and auditorium were air conditioned, but that’s all. Woodham was air conditioned when I went there for summer school in that same time period.

It is hard to imagine all buildings not having central air conditioning just 40 years ago. Bur it must not have been until the late 70’s or early 80’s that central air was installed in most of the buildings. Thanks for the comment and please check back … Frank

These photos are of the 1959-60 basketball team, with both varsity and junior varsity mixed together. I have attached similar photos scanned from my 1960 yearbook. Register, Hubbard, and Kingsberry are noted on the next page as being the “big guns” for the junior varsity team. I can look up first names for you if you need them. Thanks for posting these photos. They bring back fond memories of Pensacola.
