The Fishing Couple …

Couple with Fish in Front of Studio_RTP_SFW

I do not recognize this couple or have any idea where they caught this fish, but I thought that someone out there might know who they are.  I would not doubt if this fish was caught in Pensacola Bay or it might have even been caught in Bayou Texar, just judging from the size the boat that this couple is standing in front of.  You see my father’s studio in the background … this was when it was located on Gonzalez Street, before he moved across the street to 12th Avenue.  Thanks again for looking and let us hear from you … Frank

More Skiing on Bayou Texar …

Skiing 1_ SFW _ 1_9_13

I do not know these skiers, but it is more interesting to look at how Bayou Texar has changed.  Just looking at all of the trees on either side gives you a feel that their are not that many homes on the Bayou.  When in fact the Bayou had homes on almost all of the lots going from the Cervantes Street bridge all of the way to the 12TH Avenue Street bridge.

One thing that you do notice is the lack of boat houses on the Bayou.  Most homes had a small dock, but there did not seem to be a lot of boat houses … now some of the boat houses are large enough for you to live in.

John ” Duke ” Wayne in Pensacola Florida …

leave a comment »

Here is a photo of John Wayne that my father made back in 1955 or 56, I am not sure exactly of the year.  Duke was here in Pensacola making the movie, The Wings of Eagles , a John Ford film about a Navy aviator. He was staying at the Town House Motor Lodge and Mrs. Head, the owner, asked him if she had a photographer come over would he mind having his photo made for her ” celebrity ” wall.  Fine with him, he told her.  So my father went over and met Mrs. Head and Duke outside of his room.  Mrs. Head introduced my father and Duke said that he remembered him from the airport taking photos when he got off of the plane.  Mrs. Head then said that he was there to take his photo for her wall.  To which Duke replied, ” I told you that I would send you a real nice photo when I got back to Hollywood. ”  He then looked at my dad, put his arm around him and said, ” You know, that sounds as if I do not think that you can take a good photograph? ” .  My dad said he just stood there, not knowing how to respond to the number one movie star in America at the time.  Duke then said, ” Well, come on in my room and Frank you can take anything you like … just tell me where to sit and what you want me to do. ”  My dad said that he could not have been nicer and said that he would send him a couple of photos and autugraph any photo that my father made.  I have scanned the photos that he sent and I will post them next … I cannot remember if I posted the autographed photo that he made, along with the one of hime getting off the plane, so I will go back and check.

If anyone has any stories to share of John Wayne when he was here making The Wings of Eagles , please let us hear from you … or for that matter, any John Wayne story that you might have.  Thanks for looking and I appreciate all comments.  I hope all of you father’s have a Happy Father’s Day …

Southern Bell Wall Phone …

with 13 comments

These are several new photos that I have never posted before.  The one above shows this service technician installing a wall phone.  This was made in the early 1950’s, so this could have been for an ad showing the new ” wall phone ” from Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company.  How many of you out there can remember when the phone company was named that?  And I am sure that black was the only color that it came in.  Here is one more photo …

Notice how the lady of the house is having to use the hand – crank on the side to power the telephone?  The marvels of new technology!  Next thing you know Southern Bell will be offering different colors in this wall phone, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves now.  This was before my time, so if anyone remembers these phones, please let us hear from you.  Thanks for looking …

Hygeia Bottling Works in Pensacola …

with 10 comments

This was the first Coca-Cola Bottling plant in Pensacola … I posted a view from the road earlier, but I ran across this side view and thought that I would through it up here.  I do not know where this was located, but it is next to some train tracks.  They would be to the left or the back of this building if they were in view.  I think I have a view showing the tracks somewhere, so I will look and see what I can find.  Thanks for looking and as usual, all posts are welcomed …

Votech in Pensacola …

with one comment

I have never posted these images before … mainly because I did not know anything about the images.  My first inclination was to bring up the Ice-Cube movies that I thought were funny, but then I decided against it and just let the images speak for themselves.  Below is the other one …

I wish I knew where these were made … school, class, students, etc, but as usual I have no idea about either of the images.  If anyone has any information, please share it with us.  Thanks for looking …

Waters & Hibbert Funeral Home …

with 2 comments

Waters and Hibbert Funeral Home is still located down at the corner of  Gregory and Spring Streets.  This was made sometime in the 1950’s … back when the Greyhound Bus Station was next door on the corner of Gregory and Baylen Streets.  I have a photo that I made of the Bus Station in the 1970’s somewhere around here that I will find, so that you will have a better idea of the location.  Thanks for looking …
