First Flight Golf Balls …
These photos were taken back in 1959 out at Pensacola Country Club. The two guys above I have no names for the two guys in the photo above. By the way, I am not even sure if they make First Flight golf balls anymore … the name does not ring a bell to me at all. I am sure a couple of you old timers will remember hitting a First Flight ball with your wooden head driver. I bet the young golfers will be surprised to know that before titanium heads on your drivers, they were made out of wood. That seems like the dark ages now. Here are some more photos of golfers, none of which are really familiar to me …
Bud Ellsworth, Jim Stamps and Carroll Armstrong are the golfers names. I only know that because I read their names on their golf bags. Now that I think about their names, they do sound remotely familiar. Like I mentioned earlier, these photos were taken out at Pensacola Country Club and I know that the background has changed in the last fifty something years, so might give some of there old members something to reminisce about. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
Hopkins Boarding House …
OK … I took these back about thirty years ago for Mrs. Hopkins, so technically they are not my father’s, but I thought that they were more relevant over here than over on my blog. I cannot remember why she had me do these and as you can tell, since the parking lot is practically empty, these were made on the one day that they were closed … Monday. I cannot tell you how many meals that I personally at here or how many meals that I carried out over a span of twenty or so years. For a span of several years back in 1981, 82 and some of 83, I lived only a couple of blocks from here on Spring and Barcelona Streets. This was the only restaurant that cooked and served liver that everyone seemed to enjoy. And everyone knew about the fried chicken! This place was around back in the 1940’s because my father used to tell a story of one of his friend’s that Mrs. Hopkins would not allow to eat there because he ate so much. I cannot attest to that because I used to see some guys eat so much, I do not know how they were able to walk away. Here are a couple of more views …
If these photos do not make your mouth water for some good home-cooked fried chicken, nothing will. I can not remember if the place closed before Ed Hopkins died or it closed soon after it passed away, but I am sure that someone out there knows. If I do not receive a dozen or so comments about these photos, I will be greatly disappointed. If you never ate here, going to Golden Corral and Ryan’s does not even come close these days. The one thing that I always liked was the fact you ate at a ” communal ” table with everyone. I always enjoyed talking to strangers, so it never bothered me, but my wife was never comfortable with it all that much. No, I am not going to run out to KFC or Church’s for a fried -chicken fix when I get through with this post. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
PS – I had one more of the north side of the house that I forgot to post earlier that showed the parking lot. It did not hold a lot of cars, so you ended up parking in front of someone’s house several blocks away and walking. The walk back to your car always took longer since you were always so full. Thanks … Frank
Out West on The Reservation …
No clue where out West or what reservation that these Indians are on. I am not sure of the year either, but I know that it is around 1958 or so. I have several other negatives from this trip that I will find and see if they might give me a clue. I have scanned a lot of negatives and transparencies recently, so that I have a good number of images to work up for this blog and for my personal blog. Thanks again for looking and please check back … Frank
First Flight …
No, this has nothing to do with airplanes, just golf balls. I found several negatives that my father had made back in the 1950’s for the golf ball company First Flight. I do not know if they still make this brand of golf ball anymore. My years of playing golf ended a long time ago. This is the only image that I worked up and I will post the rest at a later date. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
Southern Normal School …
I ran across this negative years ago and it did not do much for me, but when I ran across it the other day it looked more interesting. I think that it the old Eastern Airline prop plane in the photo got my attention this time around. The Southern Normal School is located in Brewton, AL, about 60 miles north of Pensacola. I googled the school and found some history about the school. I could not tell if it was still open, but I got the impression that it might be closed down. I have no idea who the people in the photo are or what their purpose for the photo is other than capturing a memory of a trip. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Coke Machine …
There are several reasons for posting this image of an old Coke machine … the first and main reason is the ten cents above the coin slot. I can not remember a Coke ever being ten cents, I believe I can remember it being a quarter, but I am not positive on that. The next is the style of the Coke machine itself. I can barely remember lifting a slot like the one above to get a drink out. I remember the drink box better where you lift up the top and then slide your bottle to the end to work your drink out. The kids today reallt have it rough when they have to put a couple of bills in to get their drink out and don’t even think about getting a Coke out of a machine in Orlando / DisneyWorld! Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
Bryce Canyon, Not The Grand Canyon …
This is from a transparency that my father had made back in the 1950’s on one of his trips out west to visit his sister. I made the mistake earlier of identifying the above image as the Grand Canyon and bubbasuess wrote and said that this is Bryce Canyon in Utah. That makes sense because I knew that my father had been to Bryce Canyon on one of his trips out West, since he had talked about it occasionally. I like the color in this transparency … nothing was done to change or alter the color, all I did was take out the dirt marks. Thanks for looking and again thanks for identifying the correct canyon … they all sort of look the same to me after a while. Please check back … Frank
Equality Cornet Band … Update
I have had this image floating around for decades and finally got around scanning it a year or so back. I am fairly sure that my father did not photograph this image … the only thing that I can think of is that someone brought it by to be copied or something and never returned to pick it up. I know absolutely nothing about the ” Equality Cornet Band ” and I have never bothered to Google it either. Maybe I should have done it before I posted it, but as usual, I did not bother. However, on the other hand, that is not really my purpose or am I all that interested in the history of the ” Equality Cornet Band “, it just makes me smile when I look at the image. So on that note, thanks for looking and please check back. I have been scanning a large selection of negatives that I have had laying around, so I should have enough to keep me busy for the next few months. Thanks for looking … Frank
PS – I Googled ” Equality Cornet Band ” and nothing popped up, so I have nothing more to add. Maybe some of you jazz aficionados might recognize the group … I don’t know if they would be classified as jazz or marching band or big band or what. I just cannot imagine that there is not anything out there on the internet about the group.
Thanks To Deborah at ” Airports Made Simple ” …
I just wanted to take a minute and thank Deborah over at Airports Made Simple for asking me to to be her ” Guest Blogger of the Month “. She did all of the layout and design on her blog, all I did was supply the photos and some copy. She arraigned everything and added some quotes to really tie everything together to make the posts so interesting and readable.. She really has an ” eye ” that gives her blog such a professional look and feel. And all of the great information that you get from reading her blog is fantastic. I have learned so much from scanning her blog and seeing all of the informative comments that she receives from her readers are so great. She also does such a good job of connecting and communicating with her readers that I try to take something away from her in that area. I have received an increase in viewers to my site since see has had me on her blog and that sure has been nice to see a boost in hits. So thanks again Deborah for including me in your blog … Frank
