Frank Hardy Made My Photographs Two

A Few More From The Dons File …

Team Secretary _ RTP _ SFW

These two images are ones that I found in my files from the Dons, but neither one have anything to do with the baseball team.  The photo above is the secretary / office manager / business manager … I guess she was the one that kept the wheels on the truck for the Dons.  Notice the bare concrete block walls in the office.  I do not believe that sheet rock was used in the construction industry until the late 1960’s or even the 1970’s.  I know that most houses built in the late 1950’s used a type of plaster over plywood on room walls.  If anyone is familiar with the construction industry in the 1950’s and 1960’s could tell us about the plaster walls and tell us when sheet rock started being used.  The photo envelopes in the right hand corner was the type of photo mailers used back in the 50’s.  I have one or two of these laying around, but I know I have not seen one used in thirty five years or so.  The photo below is one that was from the body building contest photos that I forgot to include.  I do not know who these guys are, but they look vaguely familiar … I am sure some one out there will recognize one of these guys.

Suits 1 _ 8x10 _ RTP _ SFW

One more thing, if anyone out there has a color photograph showing a player or the team, I would be interested in seeing the photo.  All of the photos that I have of the team are all black and whites.  I am interested in seeing what color the Dons team logo is on the player’s uniforms. Also, if anyone ever runs across a home movie made at one the Dons games, please let me hear from you.  It is funny that there can not be any film shot during a Dons game that is lying around in someone’s file cabinet  On the other hand, I do not think that the home movie business started until the 60’s.  You had color transparency film back in the 1950’s and a little in the 1940’s, however it was used mostly by the military and the magazine photographers.  Color film for the general consumer was not available until the 1960’s and I wanted to say mid-1960’s before it became common place.

Well, that is all I have for this post.  Let me hear from hear if you come across any color movie film or color photographs on the Dons.  I hope everyone has a safe Fourth of July.  It is hard to believe that 2014 is half over and that Christmas is just around the corner.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Water Fall Out West …

Water Falls_8x10_RTP

I do not know anything about the location of this water fall, other than I am pretty sure that it is in one of the National Parks out west.  Which one I do not know.  I have come across this negative years before and thought nothing of it, but after I scanned it I thought that someone out there might recognize it and let me know where it is located.  This image was made back in the late 1940’s and so I am sure that it looks a lot different today.  Thanks for looking … Frank

The Pensacola Dons And Another Promotion …

A good while ago, I posted a photo of a Dons player awarding a pretty girl in a bathing suit some flowers for winning a beauty contest.  No one recognized the player or the girl, but the someone did identify the master of ceremonies for the event as a local radio personalty.  In the background were the rest of the beauty contestants.  Here is that photo again …

Beauty Contest 1_RTP_SFW

Note the suitcase that reads ” Philco ” that I guess contains the equipment to broadcast the event on local radio.  I cannot identify what radio station, but I would imagine that it was either  WCOA, WBSR  or some other local station.  So, since the Dons management had this event for all of the guys out in the audience, they needed to do some for all of the ladies sitting in the bleachers down at the Admiral Mason Park … a body builders contest.  I do not know if this event was held on the same night or if it done on another night and as usual, I have no idea who any of the body builders are or who the young lady is awarding the winners.  I cannot tell if she is this girl above or not, but she very well could be.  So here goes … I am just going to post all of the photos and save my comment to the end …

After looking at these photos, I am going to say that the girl in the top photograph is the girl in these presenting the trophies to the body builders.  As usual, I do not have a clue who any of these people are.  I have been surprised that I have not received that many comments from people who attended the Dons games from back in the late 1950’s.  I also am interested if anyone recorded any film from any of the games or of just random footage shot at the Admiral Mason Park during this era of the Dons.   I realize that this will be a long shot, but I am interested in seeing if anyone shot anything.  When I was looking through my scans of the Dons recently, I discovered that I have around 100 to 120 scans from the Dons years of 1957, 58 and 59, so I will try to throw up a few more in the next few weeks.  Please check back and let me hear from you … Frank

Pensacola Dons with Bo Belinsky …

Pitching Group _ RTP _ 19 June 14 SFW

This is a group photo of the pitching staff of the Pensacola Dons from 1959.  I am not 100% on the year, but I am pretty sure that was the year.  Belinsky in the the back row on the far right side.  I do not have a clue who any of the other pitchers are at this point … I will have to do some checking and see if I can find some names.  I ran across a folder that I have scanned, but I have not cleaned any of the photos up and gotten ready to post.  There might be 40 or so negatives that I have scanned in this folder.  Some negatives are of a group of male body builders in their bathing suites and some girls giving them their awards.  I have posted a photo of a beauty queen receiving a trophy from a ball player, but I have not done anything with the guys.  I guess management figured if they did something for the men in the stands that they had better do something for the women so that they would not have a riot on their hands.  I will work them up in the next few weeks and post them.  Maybe the Blue Wahoos could learn a thing or two from the Dons, however the way that they pack that new stadium every game, they are certainly doing something right because it sure ain’t the way that they are playing!!  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

One more thing, here is a link to Bo Belinsky’s Wikipedia page.  He was really an interesting guy, so just google him and read about him ….

Governor Dan McCarty of Florida …

McCarty _Penton Gro_RTP_SFW

This is Governor  Dan McCarty of Florida photographed at Penton’s Feed Store in Milton.  I am not sure of the exact date, but it had to have been taken sometime in 1953 because he was only governor for nine months.  He passed away in September of 1953.   Here is a link to a Wikipedia site on Gov. McCarty.  I have posted some other photos of him in downtown Milton, but I had not posted this one yet.  I believe that Penton’s is still open in Milton on Alabama Street.  If anyone remembers him coming to Pensacola, please let us hear from you.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Anyone Recognize Any of These People …

with 4 comments

IMG_0892 UnKnown Group _ RTP 5x4_ SFW

Do any of these people look familiar to you?  The man on the far left looks vaguely familiar to me … no clue to the lady … the next guy, maybe and the guy on the end, no clue.  The photo is torn in several places and is not in very condition and I can not even identify where the photo was made or what they are standing in front of.  I have a feeling someone out there will recognize someone in this photo.   To the people here in the panhandle, I hope that you made it through the rain storm unscathed and all right.  For the people who did not, I feel for you … we lost our home in Hurricane Ivan, had more damage the following year with Dennis, so I know what you are going through.  You just have to remember that time heals everything … that no matter how bad it looks today, it does get better.   When ?  Well. that is the $64,000 question.  So good luck and if anyone knows any of these people, leave a comment.  Thanks for looking … Frank

Marineland of the Pacific …

Marineland 3 _RTP_16 April 14 _ SFW

I ran across these transparencies years ago and I always thought that they were made down at the Gulfarium at Fort Walton Beach Florida.  But after I started looking at them more closely, I saw ” Marineland ” written on one of the life-saving rings around the pool.  After two and two together, I came to the brilliant conclusion that this must be Marine of the Sea or the Pacific.  I personally do not remember any of this and my father never mentioned going, but that does not mean anything.  Here are some more images …

The first image just shows the crowd and pool mainly.  The other three you can see tricks with the porpoises or dolphins, I am not sure which.  I have some more images of Marineland that I might clean-up and post later.  If anyone wants to share their memories of Marineland from the 1950’s, please be my guest.  To think that Seaworld and all of the other parks started from something like this is pretty amazing to me.  Now, if all you saw was a dolphin eating fish out of someone’s mouth, you would be very disappointed.  Thanks for looking and please check back … I have been busy trying create an inventory of images worked up and ready to post.  So I have half a dozen or so posts ready to go, I just have to get around to posting them.  Thanks again for looking … Frank

One more thing, I just created a post over on my blog that I would like you to see.  You can click on it here .  If you find that you have the time and would like to see some interesting photography, just click on the link and it will take you to my personal photo blog.  I have included a link there that will take you to the images.  Once you find one of my images ( you should not have to go more than a few pages back since today is  18 April.  After this date I do not know ).  Once you find one of my images, click on it and the same image will open up only larger.  If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will find the other images that I have upload.  I have all of this written and more on my blog if you are interested.  I do not know if it does any good or not in getting selected by Getty, but as usual, I will take all the help that I can get.  As always, I appreciate all of the views and the comments … Frank

Florida Fence Company …

Fls Fence Co 2 _ RTP _ SFW

These images were made for the Florida Fence Company back in the 1950’s.  I do not know the subdivision or location of the pictured house / fence.  I have some more ” subdivision ” photos that I will post in the future.  To me, they are fairly interesting, but I do not seem to get a lost of response when I post those type of images.  Here is one more showing more of the house …

Fla Fence Co _ 1 _ RTP _ Lucis _ SFW

One thing that the young viewers might not recognize are those metal structures on the side of the house.  And also, there is not one satellite dish in the picture.  I want to say that the larger of the two antennae might be some type of radio antenna, like a ” ham ” radio tower.  But I am not sure, or maybe it is the other way around.  I feel confident that someone out there can fill us in.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Sacred Heart Hospital Nurses From The 1940’s …

Unknown Nurse From the 40s_ RTP SFW

No names, I just thought that this was just a nice photo of a nurse out front on the steps of the Old Sacred Heart Hospital.  I had scanned 30 or 40 images from the 1940’s at the hospital back in February, but just never got around to doing anything with them.  So, I thought that I would post a few of them now and see if anyone might recognize any of the girls or maybe the nuns.  Here is another …

Luncheon at OSSH _ RTP SFW

Some type of luncheon or dinner, you decide.  Here is one more of some type of presentation …

Nurses with Nuns_RTP_16 April 14 SFW

The nurse on the left side of the image is one that keeps showing up in some of the images, but I do not know who she is.  She just has a very familiar face for some reason or another, this was at least ten years before I was born so she would not have been someone that I would have known.  This is all of these that I am going to post now, I will save more for later posts.  If any of you nurses from the 1940’s recognize any of these girls, please let us hear from you.  Thanks again for looking and please check back … Frank

Another First Methodist Photo …

First Methdist 1 _ RTP _ 8 April 14 SFW

This is not a great photo … it is not as sharp as I would like it to be.  I have several different variations of this view and I have been working on one for the longest trying to remove the telephone pole out of the photo.  I have about half taken out and I have spent too many hours on it already, but I will finish it one day.  In the mean time I thought that I would just throw this one out.  My father made this back when it snowed fairly hard in Pensacola back in February of 1958, I believe was the year.  If I am wrong, please correct me.  You also see in the corner on the right side of the frame,  the old furniture company building that now houses The Wright Place.  I wish I could remember the name of the old furniture company, but that was before my time.  I remember that Rhodes Furniture occupied the building on the other side of Wright Street across from Christ Church.  If anyone has any comments, please let us hear them and thanks for looking … Frank

NOTE:  The image that I mentioned in the above post is up on the blog and it does have the telephone pole in the image.  I have been working on taking it out and I will eventually.  I am not sure of the date that I posted it, but it is only about 20 or so posts back from this one.  You can go up to the ” search ” button on the top right side of this blog and type in ” First Methodist Church ” and it will pop up with a few other First Methodist posts … Thanks
