Nuns in Front of Old Hospital 2_SFW_FHP_July 11

Here is a group of nuns standing in front of the old Sacred Heart Hospital.  I do not know anything about this photo or why it was made.  My guess it was for some type of promotion or maybe a publicity photograph, however I know that when this photo was taken in the 1950’s, hospitals did not promote themselves like they do now.  Thanks for looking … Frank

  2. Hello Frank Jr.- do you know if the old Sacred Heart Hospital had a T.B. ward back in 1951? My husband’s grandfather died in Milton in 1951 from T.B. and we’re trying to figure out why he would have gone there from St. Pete to die. Or do you know of a separate facility that was in existence back then?
    Thank you, Kay Ennis

    • Hello Kay, thanks for commenting and looking. I do not have a clue about a T.B. wing / section of the old hospital. However, I can give you the name of someone who most likely can … Michael Ritz. His father bought the old Sacred Heart Building more than twenty years ago and you could call him the building ” historian “. I do not personally know his phone number, but if you know how to look-up names and addresses on “Google” he should be easy to find. He gives tours through the old building occasionally, so I am sure that he knows all of the history dating back to when the building was built back around 1916. If you can not find a contact number, let me know and I will stop by and get it from him and possibly find out an answer for you. All I am is a photographer and really a historian. I have learned a lot from everyone’s questions through the years and that would be something that I would be interesting in finding out. Keep in touch with me and we will find something out for you. A side note … maybe he just wanted to move to St. Pete for some unknown reason? Thanks again … Frank

  3. Frank, Thanks for posting the Old Sacred Heart hospital! I was born there in 1942. I also had to stay in the hospital when I was 15 due to being dehydrated from a virus. The Nuns wore their habits then and they were so nice and made my stay as comfortable as possible. I remember when it was a school for Nurses and they lived in the dorm there.

    • Thanks for the comment, Glenda. I too was born there August 11, 1953 and I had my tonsils removed in 1959. That was the last time that I ever spent a night in the hospital until April 27, 2009. I made it 50 years without a stay in the hospital! I have been very fortunate health wise. In all those years I never missed a wedding, a family sitting, senior portraits, etc, etc. Thanks again … Frank
