Frank Hardy Made My Photographs Two

Modesto City Limits …

with 4 comments

Here is another photo that my father made in Modesto California, this time at the city limits sign.  The road intersecting this is named ” Griswold “.  I am sure that this intersection now has a couple of convenience stores and maybe even a couple of fast-food restaurants, but back in the 1950’s it was out in the country.  If anyone knows what is here now, let us know … I am sure that I can go to Google Earth and find out if I do not here from anyone.  Thanks for looking …

  1. I grew up very near that intersection, and I’m back in the home I grew up in now as an adult. That road we’re looking down? It’s widened to a 5-lane heavy-traffic street that doubles as hwy 108 through “town”… and the city limits are miles away in any direction. I do love these old Modesto photos. My mother was born in Modesto, as well, and she’s now 76. She’ll love them.

    • AS I said in an earlier post, I have never been to Modesto and my father never mentioned about traveling through there on his earlier trips out West to visit his sister in Los Angeles. I ran across these negatives in a film box and thought that they just looked interesting, cleaned them up in Photoshop and posted them on this site. I have really been surprised of all the comments and hits that I have had from people searching for Modesto photos. Most of the images that I posted I did not know that they were made in Modesto until someone commented. Thanks again for your comments … Frank

  2. This photo appears to be taken of Mchenry avenue looking south. There is a used car dealer now on the corner to the right where the traffic signs are. On the the other side of Mchenry next to the car coming toward the camera is what is now the Sundial Senior Living Community which was originally the Sundial Lodge. The Sundial was a hotel/ motel which opened in 1956. The original owner was Grace Covell. Interestingly, she was also the owner of the Hotel Covell which is shown in your father’s two previous photos of downtown Modesto.

    • Thanks for the comment Richard … My father never mentioned going to Modesto when he was alive, so I know nothing about when he went through Modesto or why he made the photos. The unusual thing to me is how many people have come to this blog for the Modesto posts and the several comments made have been very informative. Thanks again for the information … if I come across any more views that my father made in Modesto, I will be sure to post them. Frank
