1940’s Street Scene …

Street Somewhere _ RTP_ 22 Jan 15 _ SFW

I did not know what to call this photo since I did not know where this street scene is located.  The thing that attracted me was all of the old cars on the street … it looks like a movie set to me.  I do not know the date, but I would guess that it might be in the 1940’s just from looking at the cars .  It could be some street out in California because of the palm trees lining the road.  If anyone has any idea where this could be, let us hear from you … Thanks for looking … Frank

I do not know which golf course these gofers were playing … back in the 1940’s, I believe that the only two courses in the area were either NAS or Pensacola Country Club.  I am pretty sure that Osceola was not around in the 1940’s and Scenic Hills was not built until the 1960’s.  I am sorry that I do not have anymore information, but someone out there might remember these golfers passing through Pensacola.  I am fairly sure that they were playing an exhibition, since Pensacola did not have a professional tournament until the 1960’s.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Boy Blowing Bubbles in the Backseat …

Boy Blowing Bubbles 1 _ Correct Scan _ RTP 2 _21 Nov 14_Lucis_Best _SFW

Ok, Ok … I made a mistake on the last ” Boy Blowing Bubbles ” image and I did scan it backwards.  I thought that it was sort of interesting that someone was driving an auto brought over from England since the steering wheel was located on the right side.  However, after Rusty noticed it and said that the image was backward, I went back and rescanned it correctly and worked it up.  I also did another negative that was in the envelope that I did not bother working up and posting earlier.  The detail in the car’s body is more interesting than the bubbles that the boy is blowing, which do not really show up all that well.  The car is parked on DeSoto Street in front of the offices on the side.  My father’s first studio was located here before he moved across the street to 12th Avenue, so this was made in the late 1940’s.  Next is another view straight on of the boy blowing bubbles and you see the north side of the old Sacred Heart Hospital in the background …

I do not know the make or model of the automobile, but it looks like it is brand new or it had just been washed and waxed.  As mentioned in the earlier post, I have no idea who this boy is but some of you out there might recognize the boy.  Thanks for looking and keeping me straight … if you ever notice a glaring mistake like I had made earlier, please let me know … Frank

Nurses At Sacred Heart Hospital In The 1940’s …

Nurses By Flag_RTP _ SFW

Staying in the 1940’s, I scanned some prints that my father had made at the old Sacred Heart Hospital.  The three that I am posting are ones that I just scanned in the past several days … mostly because they did not require too much Photoshop work to get ready to put up on this site.  This first one has always been interesting to me and for some reason or another I have just never gotten around to scan it.  The next is a group of nurses on the steps out front of the hospital …

Nurses Out Front of Hospital _ RTP _ SFW

Note all of the ivy on the walls out front of the hospital and also notice the round globe lights … I do not think that I have seen these before, maybe I have but I just do not recall at the moment.  The last one is of the nurses in the nursery with a newborn …

Nurses in Nursery _ RTP _ SFW

Notice the ” S C ” on the nurses pocket that stands for ” Sister’s of Charity “, the order that ran the hospital.  I wish I had more information to share with you about these images, but maybe someone out there might recognize some of the nurses in these photos and know something to share with us.  I will say that these images from the 1940’s and earlier are all prints that I scan … that accounts for the color of the images, which I think is interesting.  I could take the color out in Photoshop, but for some reason I like the color and tone of the images.  I will not necessarily that they have aged this color as much as I believe some where printed on a ” warm ” tone paper.  The images that are more black and white might have been printed on a ” cold ” tone paper.  Thanks for looking and if you know anything about any of these images, please feel free to comment.  Thanks for looking … Frank

Fun on Pensacola Beach in the 1940’s …

Beach Fun - Group _ RTP _ SFW

No, this was not staged recently to make it look like it was made back in the forties …it was actually  made sometime in the late 1940’s, I am not sure of the year.  Maybe some of could tell from the bathing suits that the girls are wearing.  The men’s suites look like they could have been bought with in the last few years.  I would guess that this shot was taken at Casino Beach looking at the buildings in the background.  I have one more beach photo …

Beach Fun _ Girl _RTP _ 12 Nov 14 _ SFW

The above image was toned and I did not bother trying to make it match the previous group image.  As usual, I have no clue who any of the people in the photos are.  The only sure thing that I know is that they were made on Pensacola Beach.   The thing that really catches my eye is how wide the beach is in these photos … it looks as if it could be several blocks from the water to where the buildings start.  Now when you go to Pensacola Beach, in some areas it doesn’t seem to be a hundred feet from the road to the Gulf.  I bet there was not any beach re-nourishment program going on back then, in fact, I would wager that if you had told someone back in the 1940’s if you were going to spend millions of dollars to build the beach up … they would have said that it would only wash away in a year or so, if that long.  Better not let any of the ” brains ” on  the Santa Rosa Island Authority Board hear about that!  Next thing you know they will be subsidizing concerts on Pensacola Beach with tax-payers money!!!  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Yogi Begging For Food …

with 2 comments

Out West 2_RTP_7 Nov 14 SFW

Yes, ladies and gentlemen … that is a bear ( it could be Yogi or maybe BooBoo ) stopping this car and is begging for food.  This was back in the 1940’s when bears were nice and friendly and you were not scared of a bear ripping your arm out it’s socket or attacking you for no apparent reason.  Why, I bet this bear would even let you rub his head and the worst thing that could happen would be him slobbering on you or giving you a big old bear kiss.  I long for the good old days … how about you?  I imagine that this was out in Yellowstone National Park or maybe Yosemite Park.  Let me hear you bear stories … I know that some of you out there have had to run across a friendly bear or two in your travels.  Thanks for looking and that is all for now … Frank

City of Baton Rouge …

Ferry_City of Baton Rouge_RTP_7 Nov 14 _SFW

The name on this ferry says ” City of Baton Rouge ” and all of the vehicles look to be from the 1940’s.  This must have been from one of my father’s trips out West to see his sister.  I would guess that this is the Mississippi River just by the name of the car ferry.  I have no other information than what I have written and as usual, it could be all wrong.  Maybe someone viewing this blog might have some comment about this ferry’s location, etc, etc.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Nurses Out Front Of Sacred Heart Hospital 1940’s …

Two Nurses Out Front_RTP_16 April 14 SFW

These two nurses are standing out front on the lawn of the old Sacred Heart Hospital …in the background  to the left you see the base of the marble stairs.  As usual, I have no clue who these young ladies are.  I have had this photo lying around for years and have just never posted it for some unknown reason.  If anyone has a clue who these nurses are, please feel free to share it with us.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Harry James In Pensacola …

UnKnown Celebrity _RTP_2_20_14 SFW

The tall guy with the black jacket is Harry James, famous trumpet player and band leader.  What he was doing in Pensacola, as well as who the other people in the photo are, is a mystery to me.  In fact, the only thing that I knew about Harry James was that he was the first big-band leader to hire Frank Sinatra back in 1939.  Here is a link to his Wikipedia site.  I also saw that he was married to Betty Gable at one time in his life … that I am impressed with.  Betty Gable, I believe, had the number 1 pin-up / photo for the guys in WW II.  If anyone recognizes any of the other people in the photo, please let us know.  Also, if he was in Pensacola to play a concert or whatever, let us know.  Thanks for looking … Frank

Water Fall Out West …

Water Falls_8x10_RTP

I do not know anything about the location of this water fall, other than I am pretty sure that it is in one of the National Parks out west.  Which one I do not know.  I have come across this negative years before and thought nothing of it, but after I scanned it I thought that someone out there might recognize it and let me know where it is located.  This image was made back in the late 1940’s and so I am sure that it looks a lot different today.  Thanks for looking … Frank
