The ” Milk Bottle ” …
I can remember my dad taking us the Milk Bottle many a nights for ice creme when I was young. It was located where the parking lot across the Pensacola Civic Center is now located. I think that would be the corner of Davis and Gregory Streets. I do not remember ever going inside and eating … I can only remember driving up in the car and I believe someone came out and took your order. And I do not think that they were on roller skates! In about 1960 ( I was about 14 or 15 ) a friend and I each built our own sailboats.We lived in Fort Walton Beach. That summer we convinced out parents to let us go sailing for a couple weeks. We were both in the Boyscouts and experienced campers… and we both had built our first sailboats. Took us about a week to get through Santa Rosa Sound to Pensacola. We only had flour and grease for cooking and ate fish, crabs and seaweed, plus a few edible plants we found along the way. We pulled up our boats on the bank at Pensacola and hid them with palmettos. We walked to the Milk-Bottle and bought cheeseburgers, fries and Cokes. We sat on the curb out front and ate. It was the best meal I ever had.

My Daddy Mike used to bring me to the milk bottle for ice cream 1945-49. We always went inside. But… my first milk shake was at Doggetts Drive In. Thought I’d died and gone to heaven.

I can remember going down to the Milk Bottle in the 50’s and 60’s. We never went inside, we always sat in the car, so you might have waited on us at some period of time. I never knew that they had an area inside that you could go sit and eat, or purchase ice creme to take home until I looked at this photo. I worked at the Milk Bottle (Pensacola Dairy) 1951 – 1953 or so. The Bears (Baers?) owned it.. I hopped curb – would take orders & bring them out & hung trays on car windows.. My first job!! Sharon Poyser Williams

The Pensacola Dairy or “Milk Bottle” was a popular teen hangout in the fifties. I believe the Eskin family owned it. I spent many happy hours both inside and in my car enjoying its treats. Bill Kreitlein

Frank, I cannot remember why I associated Pensacola Dairy with the Eskin family. But Baer certainly is a well-known name there. What about Baldwin Dairy? Wasn’t it on the west side of town?

This is my 57 ford convertable with mercury cruser fender skirts, my wife and I worked in town and used to our eat lunch here. If you notice you see my wife looking back at the camera, I had told her she was getting her picture made. I remember the photographer over in a vacant lot with one of those large cameras on a stand taking the photo. I was told a few years back the large original photo is hanging in a lawyers office down town. I have a lot of fond memorys of thet car and dairy.

Loved the Milk Bottle Tuttie Frutie Ice Cream flavor. Also, there were booths inside with Juke Boxes where you could pay 5 songs for a quarter. Lots of fun for .25!

I remember the great milk shakes. I think the first one I ever had was from there. We were from Brewton and a trip to Pensacola was a rare treat. No trip to P’cola was complete until we had gone to the “Milk Bottle” for shakes. We always sat in the booths. (Ca. mid ’50’s.) Broke my heart when they tore it down.

Joel – Thanks for the comment. I never went inside, we always sat in the car and the girls would bring our ice creme to the car. In fact, I never knew that there was an inside until I looked at this photo closely and saw the front door. I can remember them tearing down the building to make way for the I-110 off-ramp vaguely, but I believe that this was before I started driving in the late 1960’s. I could be wrong on the date, it could have been earlier and I just do not remember the exact date. Thanks for commenting and looking … Frank

4 kids from Greenwood,Al did go inside, several times, during our first trip to Pensacola, about 1939. That Milk Bottle is a very vivid memory. As I recall, there were booths where we sat and ate our cones. My Mother alluded to a place very near there where the parents would go for “adult” refreshments while us kids ate the icecream. I’ve inquired of many people during subsequent visits but seldom does a person remember. Of course, you do have to have some age on you to recall 1939. Thanks/

Jo Ann – Thanks for the comment … All that I can remember as a small kid is riding up in a car and a girl coming out and taking our order. Then, 10 or 15 minutes later, out came our ice creme. I can never remember going inside. Thanks for sharing your memories with us and thanks for looking … Frank

we ate here sometimes after a day at the beach, or some lucky nights went down for ice cream. my grandmother introduced me to buttermilk ice cream, this was one of the few places that had that.
after it closed (I110) we still had the Tastee Freeze in Gulf Breeze…

Bill – I remember it being a highlight for a six year old kid. I can never remember going inside and did not even know you could go inside until I looked at this photo. Going to Sonic to get ice creme now days just does not have the same feel as going to the Milk Bottle. Thanks for the comment … Frank
