Pensacola Dons Players …

Robbins 3_5x5_RTP_1_6_13 SFW

I have a few of the Don’s here that I have worked up … this player was named Robbins and that is all I know.  I think that it is good action photo and I enjoy looking at all of the business’ signs on the back fence.

Moore 1_5x5_RTP_1_6_13_SFW_1_6_13

This player’s name is Moore … they sure did not spare the resin on the bag.  I cannot remember ever seeing this much resin on a bag.  Maybe they just over did it for the photo, but this is a nice photo of the guy stretching out waiting for a ground ball.

Whitehead 4_5x5_RTP_1_6_13 SFW

This player’s name was Whitehead and they did not spare the resin on this bag, either.  That is all of Don’s that I have worked up.  I hope this brings back some fond memories and just think, spring training is just around the corner … sort of.  Thanks for looking and let me know if you recognize or remember any of these players … Frank

A Few More From Bo Belinsky …

Belinsky Article Obituary_SFW_11 Dec 12

Here is an obituary that my father had cut out of some paper when he died back on November 23, 2001.  He never put up Hall of Fame statistics ( 28-51 win / loss record ) , but he was often quoted as saying that he got more mileage out of those 28 wins as pitchers who one 200 games.  It was a no hitter he pitched for the Los Angeles Angels in May of 1962 that he was most famous for.  Below is a photo that I just ran across recently that my father had made of him pitching when he played for the Pensacola Dons … I have never posted this one before, since I just found it a month or so back.  It is not in very good shape and is very badly over-exposed, but you can tell that it is left-handed Bo.

Player_Belinsky_SFW_11 Dec 12

He sure looks young here!  This is around 1958, I would guess.  I have another story some where that my dad clipped out of a paper on Bo that I will find and post later.  If anyone out there has any Bo Bolinsky stories … either when he pitched here in Pensacola or when he was called up to the big leagues, please feel free to share them with us and try to keep them fairly clean ( just joking ) .  Thanks again for looking.  I have quite a few images worked up that I plan to post in the near future … Frank

WSRE’s ” History of Baseball in Pensacola ” …

with 5 comments

This is an ad that I clipped from the WSRE site advertising the airing of the next “Baseball in Pensacola”.  I saw the first airing on November 8 and it was Part 1 of the history.  Part 2 is interviews with baseball players from Pensacola that went on to play in the majors and I missed that one.   So, I am not sure what the Friday November 23 show will be, but it will be a repeat of one of the two episodes or it might be both.  You will just have to tune in and see, but if you are a fan of baseball or a history buff of Pensacola, you will enjoy what you see.  Some of my father’s photos of the Pensacola Dons was used, as were some of his views of Pensacola from the 40′, 50’s and 60’s are scattered through the first episode.  I know that they will show it again and if you missed it now, I am sure that it will be re-broadcast in the future.  Plus, I am sure that copies of it will be for sale … just go to WSRE’s site here.  Thanks again for WSRE for thinking of me / my father.   Please check back later and thanks for looking … Frank

Baseball at Admiral Mason Park …

leave a comment »

This is one that I just ran across the other day … I do not have a clue who the ball – player is, but it is a good photo of  the Admiral Mason Ball Park.  How about that press-box up top?  It sort of makes you wonder if you need to spend over 50 million dollars to play a game of baseball?  Let’s see, with interest that $50,000,00 turns into $80,000,00 + .  What a deal!!!  The new Community Ball – Park starts looking like a steel every time you run the numbers … All I can say is ” Play Ball and More Ball and More Ball … ”  Thanks for looking …

Ballpark Beauty Contest …

with 2 comments

This is something that the Blue Wahoos might to consider … A Beauty Contest … Miss Blue Wahoo.  Sort of has a nice ring to it.  My father made this photo down at the old Admiral Mason Ball Park when the Pensacola Dons were playing.  They must have had a beauty contest and this pretty young lady was the winner.  You can see all of the other contestants in the background.  I also ran across a men’s body building contest, but it is in bad shape and have not wanted to bother taking the time to clean it up.  I had posted this photo up on my old blog and someone told me who the radio announcer is, but I cannot find his name anywhere.  I am sure someone out there knows … also, if anyone recognizes the ball player or young lady, please let us know.  I would guess that this was around 1957 or 58.  Thanks for looking …

UPDATE:  The man with the microphone is Don Griffith.  Someone had emailed me that information a while back when I had the other blog and I could not find where I had put his name.  Back on Saturday, April 7, 2012, Earl Bowden had written an article in the Pensacola News Journal on the ” Opinion Page ” about the history of Pensacola Baseball through the years.  He mentioned the ” melodius WCOA broadcaster Don Meredith ” in his article and when I read that I remembered the announcer’s name.  If you can find the article ( I do not know if you can go on-line and access past articles from the PNJ … if you cannot, maybe contact them and ask how you can locate the article ) it is very interesting and entertaining … as are all the articles that Mr. Bowden writes for the Pensacola News Journal.  The only thing that I do not like is that Mr. Bowden is limited to only one column – they should give him several, since everything he writes is so interesting!  As usual, all comments are appreciated …
