Frank Hardy Made My Photographs Two

Annie Get Your Gun …

with 8 comments

Back in the 1960’s,  the Pensacola High School Chorus used to stage musicals and they were really a production!  They were as good as what you saw on Broadway … at least I thought so and all of the thousands of people that would attend the two or three shows that they would put on.  These photos are from the production of ” Annie Get Your Gun “.  I do not know the year or who the leads were.   Here are several more photos from this production …

Notice how much detail went into creating all of the sets that were used in the play.  Since this was back in the 1960’s, I am sure that the shop classes would have had to construct all of the sets.  I am sure that they did not have the luxury of picking up a phone and renting what they needed to produce all of the sets and props that were needed to create the play.  Here are a few more showing the costumes and make-up being applied …

Everyone looks as if they are having a good time and the girls are very pretty.   As usual, I do not know who any of the people are … I will go through the old Annona yearbooks that I have laying around and see if I can find some information for everyone.  I know that I should have done that before I posted the photos, but I did not.  I have more negatives from some of the other plays that they put on, however they are not in the best shape and it is going to take me some time to get them ready to post.  I hope you enjoy this bit of nostalgia … thanks for looking and as usual all comments are appreciated … Frank

  1. If my memory is correct, which ??, Jan Jones, Elisa De Marko , Martha Pinney and Rusty Minshew were in the “Oklahoma” cast that year. In 1963, we (the chorus still under the direction of Roger Hester) did “The Music Man” and Sandra Davis & Tommy Turner were just 2 of the leads I remember. In 1964 we did “Wildcats” and Guy Pinney, Pam Kennedy, Harry Kahn were a few I remember. My Senior year, 1965, was “Li’l Abner”…this was Jerry Padgett’s first year as the Chorus Director at PHS. Again, Guy Pinney, Ben Riddles, Sandra Davis, Glenn Dinkler and many more I do remember! What great years at PHS and will always hold them dear to my heart! Sylvia Nelson Ammons

    • Thanks for commenting. I can remember what a big deal it was going to these plays back in the 1960’s, and I was only in junior high school! It seemed like you were on Broadway for a few hours. I found a program for ” Oklahoma ” a while back that is in pretty good shape and I was going to take some photos of it to post, but have not gotten around to it yet. Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

      • Frank, Karen Head Askew was Annie in Annie get your gun, so Mildred Head probably hired your father to shoot it. Wise woman!

      • I can remember going to see Annie Get Your Gun back in the 1960’s when it played. I was probably only 10 or 11 back then. I also remember the PHS Chorus doing Oklahoma. I have some photos of the Chorus in one of these posts, but I have no clue what year it was taken. Thanks for commenting and I will see you over at CHS sometime …. Frank

  2. Annie Get Your Gun was presented by the PHS Chorus in 1960. The Director (his hand is raised in the first photo) was Roger Hester. Behind him is Dr. Bob Jones, a member of the faculty at PJC who always helped with the shows. We also did Guys and Dolls in 1961, and Oklahoma in 1962.

    • Paul … I can remember my father and mother taking me to those plays and what a big thing they were back then … it was just like an opening on Broadway! I have a few more that I will clean-up and post in the future. I cannot remember which play they are from, though. I have found an old program from Oklahoma that my father had saved … I might find it and copy parts and post, just to show what a big production the Chorus put on. Thanks for the comment and please check back … Frank

    • Thanks Rick … I just ran across some baseball and basketball negatives from PHS in the 60’s the other day and they were not in too bad of shape. I am going to throw up some of the basketball photos in the next few weeks. Thanks for commenting and please check back … Frank
