After School …
This panorama shows the corner of 12th Avenue and Gonzalez Street around 1956 or so … not sure about the exact date as usual. You can see all of the kids milling around because Clubbs Junior High School had just let out. Clubbs was located just two blocks of this intersection. Since this was the only area around that had any stores. all the kids headed in this direction so they could go to the Shaw’s Drug Store, Friendly Service, Winn-Dixie or Ginn’s Restaurant. You can see that 12th Avenue was still paved with bricks and I can remember that fairly well. Anyone have any comments about this time in their lives, please feel free to comment … who knows, that might be you standing on that corner? Thanks for looking … Frank
PS – I was too young in this photo … I did not get to Junior High until 1965 and I went to Workman, since we lived in Cordova Park. I had friends that went to Clubbs and they used to talk about this, but personally I never did.
I remember this time well. Every day during lunch break at Clubbs, I’d walk down to Friendly Service Grocery Store and order a ham sandwich for 25¢. I also spent a lot of time in Moultons but I don’t recall the restaurant. That may have been a little before my time (Or maybe they just didn’t have anything for 25¢ lol). In the summer of 1961 I spent months in the Sacred Heart Hospital just across the street with burns and skin graphs on my legs. I was in horrible pain but all of my memories are wonderful. Even though I was only around 12 y/o I can remember how sweet and pretty all the nurses were! I only wish my kids could experience these times. Thanks for the memories!

Thanks for the comment Gary … I have not seen or heard about your sister in 35 years or so. I hope that she is doing well. Thanks for the taking the time to write and please check back. If you have anything showing Pensacola from back in the 1950’s and 60’s, let me know. Thanks … Frank

If this photo was made in 1956, I’m sure I knew some of those kids. I lived in the opposite direction of Clubbs than this location. More likely, I would have walked north to Catalonia Park across from St. Marks Methodist Church. Clubbs’ football and baseball teams used that park for practice. Clubbs coach at that time was Charlie Cain. Principal was Ernie Priest. Hope we still have people like them in our schools. Bill Kreitlein

you know… that corner, looking in that direction doesn’t look that much different today. And I kinda like that. True I can’t get a birthday card at Moulton’s or better yet, a Pimento Sandwich at friendly Service But ah well. No I’m not in the picture, I shopped there in the 70’s.

I can remember what crowds of kids would head south when Clubbs let out … I was very young and was always amazed with these “Big” kids. They used to holler and shout and act like a bunch of nuts back then, I guess they still do today … nothing much has changed! Thanks for the comments Bill … Frank
