The Pensacola Dons And Another Promotion …

with 2 comments

A good while ago, I posted a photo of a Dons player awarding a pretty girl in a bathing suit some flowers for winning a beauty contest.  No one recognized the player or the girl, but the someone did identify the master of ceremonies for the event as a local radio personalty.  In the background were the rest of the beauty contestants.  Here is that photo again …

Beauty Contest 1_RTP_SFW

Note the suitcase that reads ” Philco ” that I guess contains the equipment to broadcast the event on local radio.  I cannot identify what radio station, but I would imagine that it was either  WCOA, WBSR  or some other local station.  So, since the Dons management had this event for all of the guys out in the audience, they needed to do some for all of the ladies sitting in the bleachers down at the Admiral Mason Park … a body builders contest.  I do not know if this event was held on the same night or if it done on another night and as usual, I have no idea who any of the body builders are or who the young lady is awarding the winners.  I cannot tell if she is this girl above or not, but she very well could be.  So here goes … I am just going to post all of the photos and save my comment to the end …

After looking at these photos, I am going to say that the girl in the top photograph is the girl in these presenting the trophies to the body builders.  As usual, I do not have a clue who any of these people are.  I have been surprised that I have not received that many comments from people who attended the Dons games from back in the late 1950’s.  I also am interested if anyone recorded any film from any of the games or of just random footage shot at the Admiral Mason Park during this era of the Dons.   I realize that this will be a long shot, but I am interested in seeing if anyone shot anything.  When I was looking through my scans of the Dons recently, I discovered that I have around 100 to 120 scans from the Dons years of 1957, 58 and 59, so I will try to throw up a few more in the next few weeks.  Please check back and let me hear from you … Frank

Pensacola Dons with Bo Belinsky …

Pitching Group _ RTP _ 19 June 14 SFW

This is a group photo of the pitching staff of the Pensacola Dons from 1959.  I am not 100% on the year, but I am pretty sure that was the year.  Belinsky in the the back row on the far right side.  I do not have a clue who any of the other pitchers are at this point … I will have to do some checking and see if I can find some names.  I ran across a folder that I have scanned, but I have not cleaned any of the photos up and gotten ready to post.  There might be 40 or so negatives that I have scanned in this folder.  Some negatives are of a group of male body builders in their bathing suites and some girls giving them their awards.  I have posted a photo of a beauty queen receiving a trophy from a ball player, but I have not done anything with the guys.  I guess management figured if they did something for the men in the stands that they had better do something for the women so that they would not have a riot on their hands.  I will work them up in the next few weeks and post them.  Maybe the Blue Wahoos could learn a thing or two from the Dons, however the way that they pack that new stadium every game, they are certainly doing something right because it sure ain’t the way that they are playing!!  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

One more thing, here is a link to Bo Belinsky’s Wikipedia page.  He was really an interesting guy, so just google him and read about him ….

Marineland of the Pacific …

Marineland 3 _RTP_16 April 14 _ SFW

I ran across these transparencies years ago and I always thought that they were made down at the Gulfarium at Fort Walton Beach Florida.  But after I started looking at them more closely, I saw ” Marineland ” written on one of the life-saving rings around the pool.  After two and two together, I came to the brilliant conclusion that this must be Marine of the Sea or the Pacific.  I personally do not remember any of this and my father never mentioned going, but that does not mean anything.  Here are some more images …

The first image just shows the crowd and pool mainly.  The other three you can see tricks with the porpoises or dolphins, I am not sure which.  I have some more images of Marineland that I might clean-up and post later.  If anyone wants to share their memories of Marineland from the 1950’s, please be my guest.  To think that Seaworld and all of the other parks started from something like this is pretty amazing to me.  Now, if all you saw was a dolphin eating fish out of someone’s mouth, you would be very disappointed.  Thanks for looking and please check back … I have been busy trying create an inventory of images worked up and ready to post.  So I have half a dozen or so posts ready to go, I just have to get around to posting them.  Thanks again for looking … Frank

One more thing, I just created a post over on my blog that I would like you to see.  You can click on it here .  If you find that you have the time and would like to see some interesting photography, just click on the link and it will take you to my personal photo blog.  I have included a link there that will take you to the images.  Once you find one of my images ( you should not have to go more than a few pages back since today is  18 April.  After this date I do not know ).  Once you find one of my images, click on it and the same image will open up only larger.  If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will find the other images that I have upload.  I have all of this written and more on my blog if you are interested.  I do not know if it does any good or not in getting selected by Getty, but as usual, I will take all the help that I can get.  As always, I appreciate all of the views and the comments … Frank

Florida Fence Company …

Fls Fence Co 2 _ RTP _ SFW

These images were made for the Florida Fence Company back in the 1950’s.  I do not know the subdivision or location of the pictured house / fence.  I have some more ” subdivision ” photos that I will post in the future.  To me, they are fairly interesting, but I do not seem to get a lost of response when I post those type of images.  Here is one more showing more of the house …

Fla Fence Co _ 1 _ RTP _ Lucis _ SFW

One thing that the young viewers might not recognize are those metal structures on the side of the house.  And also, there is not one satellite dish in the picture.  I want to say that the larger of the two antennae might be some type of radio antenna, like a ” ham ” radio tower.  But I am not sure, or maybe it is the other way around.  I feel confident that someone out there can fill us in.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Out West at The Rez _ RTP _ 5 April 14 _ SFW

No clue where out West or what reservation that these Indians are on.  I am not sure of the year either, but I know that it is around 1958 or so.  I have several other negatives from this trip that I will find and see if they might give me a clue.  I have scanned a lot of negatives and transparencies recently, so that I have a good number of images to work up for this blog and for my personal blog.  Thanks again for looking and please check back … Frank

First Flight 1 _ 1959 _ RTP SFW

No, this has nothing to do with airplanes, just golf balls.  I found several negatives that my father had made back in the 1950’s for the golf ball company First Flight.  I do not know if they still make this brand of golf ball anymore.  My years of playing golf ended a long time ago.  This is the only image that I worked up and I will post the rest at a later date.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Bryce Canyon, Not The Grand Canyon …

with 2 comments

Grand Canyon _RTP_SFW

This is from a transparency that my father had made back in the 1950’s on one of his trips out west to visit his sister.  I made the mistake earlier of identifying the above image as the Grand Canyon and bubbasuess wrote and said that this is Bryce Canyon in Utah.  That makes sense because I knew that my father had been to Bryce Canyon on one of his trips out West, since he had talked about it occasionally.   I like the color in this transparency … nothing was done to change or alter the color, all I did was take out the dirt marks.  Thanks for looking and again thanks for identifying the correct canyon … they all sort of look the same to me after a while.  Please check back … Frank

Talking On The Phone …

Hart 1 _ RTP_3 Mar 14 _ SFW

I do not know anything about this photo ( as usual ), but I just thought that it and the one below where cute photographs.   You can just barely see the black phone on the table to the girl’s left.  I would say that these images were made in the early 1950’s.  They could have been taken for Southern Bell, since my father used to take a lot of photos for them.  You can tell that big sister is trying to ignore her little brothers … her being a teenager and everything.   Here is the other photograph …

Hart 2 _ RTP _ 3 Mar 14 _ SFW

Those little guys just are not going to leave her alone.  You can see the phone better in this photo.  How many of you out there can remember seeing a phone like this?  I believe that this style of phone was around for twenty or thirty years before Bell Telephone got around to redesigning it and adding color to the units.  I have a photo somewhere showing  the new style phone and colors somewhere that I will find to post.  I am really surprised how long it took the phone company to come up with different styles of phones to offer the buying public … I guess that the public had other things in life to worry about and not the type or color of what phone they had in their house.  Not today!  You cannot even watch the Oscars without getting bombarded by the new Samsung cell phone.  Times have definitely changed!   Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Cole Wedding …

with 4 comments

These images are from a ” Cole ” Wedding that my father photographed back in the 1950’s.  I had posted an image of two twin girls standing in a hallway of the San Carlos Hotel in an earlier post.  I am trying to catalog all of the negative envelopes that I have left, which is several thousand.  I have cleaned my darkroom and I have been looking for some interesting negatives to print, also.  I do not know what order I am going to post them in, so we will just have to see what I come up with  …. here comes some images:

Cole Wedding 20 _ RTP _ Feb 2014 _ SFW

Here is the bride and groom in the reception hall at the San Carlos.  The bride’s last name was Cole, since we usually save the negatives under the bride’s maiden name.  The groom must have been Jewish ,,,I can not remember the name of the ” tent ” that the couple gets married under.  The bride must not have been Jewish, other wise they would have been married at the Temple.  Besides, Cole does not sound Jewish.  Here is a couple out in the hallway that my father had photographed the twins in …

Cole Wedding 18 _ RTP_ Feb 2014 _ SFW

As usual, I have no clue these people, but it does not really matter.  To me, that wallpaper and carpet really clash, but someone obviously thought that they went together.  I would almost say that the decorating ideas came from Las Vegas, but this hotel was built before Las Vegas was even a twinkle in the mob’s eye.

Cole Wedding 13 _ RTP_ Feb 2014 _ SFW

Note my father’s 5×7 view camera is in the background.  All of these images were from 4×5 scanned negatives, but he did take a 5×7 camera with him to weddings.  I have a handful of 5×7 negatives from most of the weddings that he shot in the 1950’s.  I thought that I would include this photo because of that camera in the image.

Cole Wedding 6 _ RTP_ Feb 2014 _ SFW

I can remember going to dances back in this reception area back in junior high school … this room was located on the top floor of the San Carlos and was a fairlly large room.  The last one is of the girls standing by a wall-sized mirror out in a hall.  You will recognize the two twins from an earlier post of them in the hall-way the couple above was photographed in …

Cole Wedding 8 _ RTP _ Feb 2014 SFW

I want you to notice how large the mirror is and the gold moulding used as a frame.  When they shut down the San Carlos in the 1970’s, the owners sold off all of the furnishings through out the hotel.  I remember someone telling me that he had bought some of the tapestries and ended up selling them to an antiques dealer in New York.  I wondered sometimes whatever happened to the mirrors when I think about the tapestries.

That is all for now … if you have any comments about any of this, let us hear from you.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

California Bungalow …

Bungalow L A 2 _ RTP_ 1_26_14 _ SFW

I have found some more negatives recently from one of my father’s trips out to California in the 1940’s and 50’s to visit his sister, Lucille.  I have no idea about the history behind these two images, other than the fact that they were made somewhere in California … could be Los Angeles, maybe Modesto … who knows.  But it looks like the type of place that you would find Humphrey Bogart walking out of after received a call in the middle of the night from an unknown stranger that said he would find a blond hair starlet lying dead across the bed if he went to this bungalow off of Sunset Boulevard.  I guess that I have read too many detective novels or have seen too many black and white films form the 1950’s.  Here is one more view …

Bungalow LA 1 _RTP_1_26_14 _ SFW

Maybe someone out there might recognize where this is … I have really been surprised of all of the people from Modesto California that have viewed this site and commented about certain areas in the past.  This place just looks like a generic photo of a California motel / apartment from the 1950’s, so I do know really expect much.  I is just fun to speculate and imagine some story behind these old photographs.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank
