About this blog …
This is a poster I created in Photoshop from various prints and negatives that I felt represented my father’s life for a memorial that we had at First Methodist Church. While I was going through all of these images, I thought it might be interesting to create a blog using images that he created from the 1930’s through the 1960’s … so that is what I have done. Most of the images I have no information about, just a negative envelope with a last name and maybe, a year. I hoped that by putting these images out on the internet someone might stumble upon them and recognize an image. Then maybe they would share what they know about it and I would get some answers. It has been slow going so far, but I have enjoyed doing it and I have met some very nice people that I would never have come across. It has been delightful to scroll through your photo archives online. I lived in Pensacola from 1959 to 1975, and your father made the only photos that I liked of myself in my teens and early 20s. Girls loved going to get their portraits made at Frank Hardy because he was kind and patient with us, and he made us look great! Thanks again for your blog posts.

Thanks for the kind words … they mean a lot. When I started posting these images years ago, I imagined receiving all kinds of comments, information, likes, dislikes, etc, etc. In reality, I am lucky to receive a handful every month. So I have lost interest and have moved on to Instagram where you get a lot response and comments. I still have thousands of images to post that could take me years, plus I am always finding more. No, that is my father that is the third from the left on the top row. I have no idea which one Shelby Foote is in the photo, because he called my father and personally thanked him for mailing this school picture to him. I was under the impression that his parent’s had divorced and Shelby and his mother moved back to live in Pensacola with her parent’s in North Hill in Pensacola. Shelby called our studio and I talked to him for 5 or 10 minutes waiting for my father to get free. I am sorry that I do not know who the students are in this photo. It had to be 1925 or 26 when the photograph was taken. Thanks for the comment … Frank

Thanks for commenting … I remember the Bowman family. You had a brother that was several years older than me ( I turned sixty in August ) that was a good baseball player / athlete. I think he played for Clubbs, then PHS for high school. I had been by your house in the late sixties to visit him several times with some of my friends that were older, he was firends with them and I was just along for the ride. I do not know what ever happened to him, but I always think about that when I ride by 16th on Cervantes … it is funny how your mind works remembering small, insignificant things like that. The lot on the corner of 16th and Cervantes was a vacant lot for forty years, but someone bought it and built a very nice home on it. Thanks again for commenting Joel and please check back … Frank

I came across your blog while searching for pics of the old Sacred Heart Hospital and the nurses. My family has lived in Pensacola dating back to the 1920’s. I have lived here since the late 1950’s. I remember many of the pictures your father took around town and portraits of my own family through the years. But I was in particular looking for pictures of certain nurses from the 1920s to early 1940s. Do you have more pictures than what is posted? So far pictures of nurses I’ve seen on your blog are not any I recognize. But its possible Frank, Sr, may have taken pictures of nurses that I would know. I had 3 relatives that were a nurse or student nurses at the old hospital.

I am not positive, but I believe it is the lobby and staircase inside the old San Carlos Hotel. Thanks for sharing your father’s pictures. Its nice to look back through the years and remember seeing his pictures in the past. My favorite is the one he took of the “12th Ave tree tunnel” and I remember it took him awhile to get that picture as he had to wait for traffic to clear.

Tracy … Thanks for the email. My father did not start working at the hospital until 1935, so photos of nurses prior to then I would not have. The photos of nurses that I have I do not who they are, since my dad did not identify any of these girls in the photo scrapbooks that I have scanned them from. Now I have a few groups of nurses from the late 1940’s and the 1950’s from when they received their RN degrees, but there are no names to any of the nurses. I have a few head and shoulder shots of nurses, but I have done nothing with them. I gave a good number of these type images to the Pensacola Historical Society, simply because I do not have the time to catalog all of them. Sometime if you are interested, call me and I will explain what I have and what I have … it is all too much to put down here. My cell phone number is 850-449-1279 and I have had this number for years, so put it aside and call me and I will explain it to you. There also is a group of these nurses that meet periodically, but the lady that was in charge four years or so ago wanted me to give them all of this and I told her I was not interested. PS – That is true about the 12th Avenue trees … the traffic was always so bad that he had to go back several times to take the photo. In fact, it was early one Sunday morning that he took the photo. Thanks for mentioning that … Frank

Penelope, I wish I knew, but I do not really have a clue. I sort of, vaguely remember a fabric store downtown, but not really. I was born in 1953, so when this photo of Elebash Jewelery Store was madwas only four or five. I do not know Lynne Robertson, but sometime in the future I will go down and introduce myself. I know the people ( Jackie in particular ) down at the Pensacola Historical Society and I go down there periodically just to say hello, but I do not know anyone down at the Wentworth Museum. Hello, Frank. I stumbled on your site looking for references for Ada Wilson and Liberace. I have been trying to find a copy of the brochure from Ada’s Pensacola Museum of Royal Antiques. I think Liberace pretty well picked it clean before her death, although I know some of the pieces remained in town for several years. I’d be happy with a scanned or photocopy version if any of your readers have one. I had one as a teenager (many years gone!) but it is long gone now I’m sure. My wife and I grew up in Pensacola. I knew Ada and her daughter, Julia, in their declining years but also remember stories of her told by T.T. Wentworth (my wife’s family) and others. Ada was quite something in her day! It is interesting to learn Liberace made several buying trips to Pensacola. Great site!

Steven … I have never seen the brochure you mention or have I ever heard about it. I am going to find my photos of Liberace and re-post them in the near future with the story that my father shared with him. Thank you for posting these pictures. I only remember back to the 60s, but the 50s pictures still bring back memories. Do you have any of the Veteran’s Day Parades from the 60s? I was a Cub Scout then, and marched in the parades. My Dad was Cubmaster of Pack 1 back then.

My cousin found this website and shared with me and my sister. We were all born in Old Sacred Heart Hospital! My mom used to go to a beauty shop across the street from the hospital, near your dad’s shop. Wow, what a great trip down memory lane looking at these photos! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the comment Glaze … I have a site on Zenfolio that I can sell prints through, but I have not put all of the images that I have posted on the blog on this site. The address is: http://www.FrankHardy.Zenfilio.com . Sometime in the future I plan on getting all of them on this site. You order through this site, you pay them, they print the image or images and then will mail them to you in a week or so. I have some prints here at my house, but I have not sat down and cataloged all of the prints that I have. If you want to email me or call me directly, I will be happy to do whatever you like. Somewhere down the line, I do plan on getting all of this organized better because I have had a few people that have wanted to purchase prints, but I have yet to do a whole lot about this. I need to do a better job, since there is so much more that I want to do … posters, note cards, some type of book, etc. However, all of this takes money on the front end to print these up and I just do not have it to do at this time. Mr. Hardy, I spent the first 10 years of my life (starting in 1960) in Pensacola, in a large victorian home @ 19 W. Cervantes Street. It was one of three homes built side-by-side in the late 1800’s by a large Jewish family. I have many fond memories of that home and am trying to find some early photos. After we moved, I heard they tore it down. My mother dearly loved that home. She is elderly and dying of cancer. I wonder if you possibly have a photo of the house or know of someone who might. I’d like to show her a picture of “our” house in it’s hey day. Thanks for anything you can do.

We’d love to use your father’s photographs of the Pensacola “round house” on The John Lautner Foundation website (actually part of a photo album), with attribution, of course. How many photographs did he take of the house? Is there a way we can see them all? And may we include copies in our photo album? Judith … Thanks for the comment. I would be happy to share what I have with you. I do not really have much, maybe 4 or 5 exterior views and and aerial view. I do not have any of the interior of the house. David Lautner and his father built my parent’s house in Cordova Park back in 1959, just up from the “Round House” several blocks. My parent’s became good friends of the Lautner’s and that is why my father made the photos of their house. If you send me an address, I will be happy to put these images on a disc and send it to you and you can do whatever you want with them. Frank, Jan Jones Thackeray( your Dad took Jan’s wedding pictures) sent me your email on your Dad’s photographs. How wonderful to see Pensacola. Just wanted to tell you when your Dad took pictures of our wedding Feb. 18,1967 in Gulf Breeze Baptist Church it was a special time. Our wedding was the first time your Dad did not us a flash for the evening candle lite service. Bob and I were kneeing at the altar and he was at the back of the church for that beautiful shot. Bob had his Army dress blues on. Our reception was held at the P’cola Garden Center on 17th. Your Dad took our 18th Birthday portraits(B/W) of my sister(1967) and I(1963). He also took pictures(B/W) of Bob and I(I was expecting second child) with our young son Mark. Bob was leaving for VN Feb.1969. Your Dad’s studio on 12th, I so remember. My Mom,Mary Alice Steele Berry,was a hair dressed at the Little Duchess near his studio. My Mom’s parents had the restaurant “Steele’s Country Kitchen” on North Palafox that the had the huge chicken out front. Have you come across any photo’s of my grandparents (Albert and Clemmie Steele) restaurant? Bob and I went to PHS class of 1963.. Thank you for sharing your photo’s. Susan … Thanks for the comment. I know who Jan Jones Thackeray is … I can remember her singing in the PHS Chorus back in the 60’s. And I think she used to live up on Blount Street somewhere between 12th and 17th Avenue back in the 70’s some time. I have not seen her in 30 years or more, so I am glad that she is still around. Susan … I just read the rest of your email. The block burnt in 1975 and he lost all of his negatives from 1975 to the early 1960’s. Most of what I have been putting up is from the 1950’s … a few from the 1940’s and the some of the stuff from the old Sacred Heart Hospital is from the 1930’s. Frank, I had forgotten the fire had destroyed that whole area. We had moved up here to Winston Salem , NC in 1973 when Bob had gotten a job with Wachovia Bank. I now remember now Mom calling me letting us know of the fire. Grandmother and PawPaw’s restaurant was first in Brent area then built new and moved to North Palafox maybe late 30’s to early 40’s. Thanks for bringing back to life your Dad’s photo’s…what a treasure,,,Some should be in the Wentworth Museum…anyone approached you about that? Wonderful history of the oldest city in the US…of course St. Augustine has the claim.

Carol … Thanks for the comment. A fire destroyed the block that my father’s studio was in back in the summer of 1975. He lost all of his negatives from then back to about 1962. The negatives from 1948 to 1961 were stored at his house and those are the ones that I am using for this blog. He was friends with Chuck Woodberry and I know that he had done work for the Woodberry’s, but all of those negatives would have been lost in the fire. He did do some of the clubs there at Escambia, but I do not believe that he ever did any of the seniors like he did at PHS for years. Very much enjoyed all of these (mostly familiar) pictures. I came to Pensacola at age 5 in 1941 and am very familiar with the Gonzales/12th Av. area. In the early and late 40’s the Shaw’s store was Wag’s drug store.and besides your father’s business, there was a Moulton’s (I believe it was their original Moultons). I remember 12th av. as a brick street along with several other brick streets. Gadsden St. was brick from about 9th Av. eastward. I well remember when the Pen theater first opened. Before it opened there was an already old thearter on 12th or 13th and Gadsden St. called the Strand. Saw many double feature cowboy films, cartoons and serial for 9 cents on Saturday mornings.

Frank, thank you so much for these pictures. Oh, the memories. I do have a few comments. The picture of the White Hut/Andy Burger was one of my daily adventures. You are correct in that it was on Navy Blvd at the entrance to the base. We lived on First St. one block over. Also it was right beside Marcello’s Restaurant.
Also the pics of Cochise, Amanda Blake, and Milburn Stone (Doc) were taken when they were in town for a march of dimes telethon. As a child I stood in line to put some money in the canoe that was sitting on the floor at the maniciple auditorium with Cochise sitting behind it and I also had some flowers they let me give to Amanda Blake. She kissed me on the cheek.
Also when Liberace was in town my friends family owned the music store that provided the piano. I didn’t go see him but they brought me his autograph.

Frank, it was Zoellner’s and I believe it was on Navy Blvd. The “Bottle” ice cream place allowed you to bring a dozen egg cartons in and exchange them for a gallon of ice milk. Do you remember ice milk? I remember my mom stacking the egg cartons and tying a string around them. It was a big deal to take them in.
My mom used to work at the Navy Point store and I would go over there after school and go to the movies next to the store and wait for her to get off work. Carol

I THINK THE YEAR IT SNOWED WAS EARLY SPRING 1954. THE OLDS PICTURED AT MITCHELL MOTORS ARE ALL 1954’S. FRANK HORN BAND, THE LAST MAN ON THE RIGHT PLAYING WIND IS TONY VISCUSO. THE FIRST PHOTOS OF THE CHEER LEADERS WITH SODA MACHINE, I AM NOT SURE BU I THINK THE GIRL ON FRONT LEFT IS EDNA FURLONG.ABOUT 1953. PHS LAST CLASS ON PLAFOX WAS SCHOOL YEAR 52-53.

I have lived all of my life in Pensacola.
You father use to take all the school photos and I stopped by to see him at his office on 12th Ave. a couple of times he was a great guy.
I Lived about five blocks from there.

I have been looking for a photo of the old Pen Theater where the number1 Fire station is located now in the 400 block of East Cervantese Street next to where the Famous Drive Inn was located.
Mayor Philpots office was on the other side of the street along with Murdock’s (Pure oil)(?) Station.
Would you happen to have a copy of the Pen?

I have not run across a photo of the Pen Theater yet … I have run across a negative of the concession area at the old Ritz Theater. Please check back periodically and see what I have put up. Thank you for your nice comments … Frank

Frank, Paul Linnabary in Wichita, KS – hometown of Pensacola. I have really enjoyed looking at your dad’s photos. Thankfully, someone knew to capture a lot of what Pensacola is all about to those of us who called it home. Is the photo of the concession stand at the Ritz on the website? Thanks so much for sharing. I was, also, born at Sacred Heart in 1950 and love looking at the old photos of the hospital. Can any of the photos be purchased?

John … Thanks for looking and thanks for the comment. When I started this blog several years ago, I wondered if I was wasting my time or would anyone find any of this interesting. I thought that my father’s photography would generate some interest, but could I write something to go along with the photographs? Since I did not know most of the people in the photos, I thought I would just ask people if they knew anything about anyone in the photos and see what happens. As it turns out, I have met some nice people along the way that have shared their information and I have received some nice comments, such as yours, that make doing this worth while. Hey Frank. This is not a picture of the Santa Rosa County Courthouse in Milton, Florida. I’ve got pictures of that courthouse dating back from 1877. I appreciate you sharing your information on your website. Lots of interesting information.

Ron – Thanks for the comment. When I wrote this, I thought that this might have been the old courthouse in downtown Milton that was torn down so that the one at the current site could be built. Do you have any idea what or where this building is located over in Milton? On most of the images that I post on this site, all I have is a name on a negative envelope and sometimes a date. People have been good about helping me identify a lot of the images and then I will post an “update” and then make a correction. Thanks for letting me hear from you and anything else who have, please let me hear from you. Frank
