The Old Kwik – Chek on Gonzalez Street …

Kwik Check 2_RTP_4 Dec 14 _ SFW

Before it was Win-Dixie, it was called Kwik-Chek … how many of you can remember that name?  OK, I see a few hands out there, not many but I see a few.  I cannot tell you how many times that I walked around this store.  In fact, I can see the lay-out of the inside like it was yesterday and I had just been in picking-up some groceries.  They remodeled the store and did some cosmetic up-grades and then several months later they shut it down and moved out on Bayou Blvd.  It was a big shock to all of the businesses and homes in the neighborhood, since this was the first time that there was a grocery store on 12th Avenue in the vicinity.  I know that I have posted some other panoramas of this area and I do not believe that I have posted this exact one.  If I have, I am sorry.  I am getting to a point that I can not remember all of the hundreds of images I have posted and I do not feel like going back through them now.  Thanks … Frank

  1. We had Friendly Service!:-) Waaay “back when”, long before any of us, the small store that became Jan Ann’s and now I’m not sure what it is, was a neighborhood grocery store, and the owners lived in its back and upstairs.

  2. We shopped here first, Delchamps on 10th/Gadsden second, and maybe ventures to Jitney Jungle (later years) (now Barnes) and if we were lucky, drove all the way up to A&P on 12th and Anderson (still smell that 8 O clock coffee) (Lucky because maybe we could go over to TG&Y for candy).
I loved the Winn Dixie. I too remember the whole store. I would shop there today if it were there.
Of course if you wanted something special or the best deli food in town, Friendly Service across the street. P.S. The Fire Dept. was able to save the Kwik Check that day, but for awhile there, they weren’t sure.
    Great photo!.

    • Bill … Thanks for the comment. We said we were going to meet at the Coffee Cup and talk the beginning of this year and we never got around to it. Maybe in January or February of 2015 we can get together. I have a post on the fire ready to put up, but it is going to be long because I have so many photos. I know that you will be interested in it, so check back in the next couple of weeks and I might have it up. I have quite a few images already worked up and ready to post … it is just finding the time to sit down and write up the post. I hope you have a nice and happy holiday … Frank

  3. Frank,

We had Friendly Service first, across from the park and at the other end from Moulton’s Drug Store :-)
…. and Delchamp’s across from the real NB Cook.

    • Thanks for the comment and commenting about those other stores. I was in a hurry yesterday and was going to mention Friendly Service, but I had to run to go pick-up my grandson from school. I had forgotten about Delchamps … I seldom went there since there were those stores within walking distance. Have a happy holiday and please check back … Frank
