Corner of 12th Avenue and Gonzalez Street …
This is the corner of 12th Avenue and Gonzalez Street around 1949. You see my father’s first studio on the right side of the image. He opened it up in 1948 when he left the X-ray Department at the old Sacred Heart Hospital in 1948. He was in this location for 6 or 7 years until the Moulton Family built the building on 12th Avenue and he moved over to that location. I have several photos of this corner throughout this blog … my personal favorite is the panorama view showing all the kids that had just gotten out of Clubbs Junior High School two blocks north. I can remember it like it was yesterday … literally hundreds of kids walking and running around hollering and screaming at one another thirty or forty minutes. I was only 5 or 6 at the time and it always scared me. Well, that is another story … thanks for looking. The corner of Gonzalez and 12th Avenue has been an important one for me. I was born in Sacred Heart hospital in 1938. I was at Clubbs from the fall of 1951 to the spring of 1954, so I was one of those “older kids” who hung around that corner. I met my wife of 55 years at that corner. She was with her sister and I was with my brother. He and I were both newspaper boys on paper routes in the area. Later I would work as a mail clerk at the East Hill Post Office branch across the street from the hospital.

Thanks for commenting, Jack. It is funny ( to me anyway ) how one area can stir up so many memories from 50 or 55 years ago. It was sort of traumatic when I left 12th Avenue back in 1998. You think back on all of the things that have happened in your life in one area and then it is gone. I can remember when the Post Office was in that block on 12th and I can also remember when it left and they had an annex between Ginn’s and Winn-Dixie. I could not have been more than 6 or 7, but I can remember it well. Thanks for writing and please check back … Frank

Bill … Thanks for the comment and I agree with you 100%. Those 7th, 8th and 9th graders were really intimidating to a 5 or 6 year old kid. They literally scared me to death. As far as East Hill photos goes, I do not a file or box that specifically contains ” East Hill ” images … as I stumble across them amongst other negative files, I post them. I just have not run across many of them lately. Check back and thanks for commenting … Frank
