Pensacola High School “Annona” Yearbook Ad …
This is another one that I ran across years ago and set aside. As usual, I am not sure these lovely young ladies are or for what yearbook ad this was photographed for … maybe a bakery, since it looks as if they are eating cake. I thought that it would bring back memories for eating in the old Pensacola High School Cafeteria. I never went to school here, but I can remember going to this cafeteria many of times when I would go over to the school with my father. If anyone recognizes who these girls are, please let us know … Thanks for looking … Frank

Thanks for the response … like I said, I did not really know him, but after thinking about it for a while I believe I saw him sing at a couple of dances when he sang with the Laymen back in the late 1960’s. As far as a yearbook for Jan, I have one of my father’s but I want to keep it. What I do have that I will give her ( and I just ran across it this weekend ) is a copy of the program from ” Oklahoma ” that she was in. It is in fairly good shape and she can have it, let let me know who I can give it to that can give it to her … I think she told me that she lives in Mobile. Whatever is easiest …

Yep, that’s my “Yug”. We lovingly call him that, because he wrote his name from right to left on the outside wall of our house when he was about 4 years old!
I’m sure Jan would appreciate the program. She and I were in that show together. She might have a copy… I do, and I treasure it!

Most all of those negatives burned up in the fire back in 1975, I guess. I do not have any of those type of negatives … what I have been posting is what I have. I do not know where you could get a yearbook from, maybe search Ebay or put something out locally on Craig’s List. I am glad you have enjoyed looking at what I have been putting up. Frank, I cannot identify the young women, but the advertiser has to be Carl’s Bakery on east Gadsden. My wife and I have Annonas from 1954-1958. All five contained full page ads from Carl’s with photographs of students, and four of them used the same set-up, i.e., a group gathered around a table in the cafeteria sampling baked goods. I’d guess that the particular photograph was in an Annona from a bit earlier, e.g., 1952 or 1953.

Thanks for the comment Jack … I never thought of Carl’s Bakery because Jay’s was just up the street and that was the bakery I used to go to the most. I remember that Carl’s used to have these little miniature pecan pies that were really delicious … they had several types – apple, cherry, lemon, pecan, etc. Thanks for the comment. Also, were you any relation to Mr. Lipscomb who was principal at PHS through the 50’s and 60’s? Frank

No relation to the principal who was at PHS. My grandfather was Superintendent of the East Hill Post Office station in the strip of stores across from Sacred Heart Hospital near where your father’s shop was. His wife, Louise, was a stalwart at First Methodist Church and I believe a Sunday School class is named for her today. My father also worked for the post office. We lived very near Bayview Park, where my brother and I spent many days swimming. Also, I must correct my earlier speculation about the date of the photograph. Mine was the first sophomore class to enter that PHS in 1954, so the posted photograph must have been the late 1950s or early 1960s. I am enjoying the photographs. Thanks so much for your effort.

Jack … believe it or not, I can still remember the “little” Post Office there. You could enter it one of two ways … either through the front door of Ginn’s Restaurant ( you walked into Ginn’s and then through an opening in the wall that entered into the Post Office area ) or there was a door off to the right that entered in front of the P.O. Boxes. I bet that at that time the “Post Office” area was no larger than 10 x10. For some reason I keep thinking that there was a dry cleaners squeezed into that little area also, but I could be wrong about that. I was raised in First Methodist Church … Rev Paul Duffy baptized me whenever it was you were baptized in the Methodist Church, six years old maybe? Anyway, thanks for the comments … it has been nice hearing from you. I graduated from high school in 1971, so you have a couple of years on me, but the memories are still there!! Thanks again … Frank

HI, FRANK.. I FOUND MYSELF TWICE– ONCE IN THE AD EATING CAKE.. I REMEMBER IT VIVIDLY BECAUSE WE DID GET TO EAT IT.!. GINGER SENTER, NANCY MUNDY, FAR RIGHT AND ONE OTHER….ONCE IN ANNIE GET YOUR GUN.. FAR RIGHT QUARTET SINGING WITH DINNA HARRIS (PONY TAIL) MARTHA PINNEY AND GINGER SENTER.. I LOST MY 62 ANNONA AND YOU’LL NEVER KNOW HOW I HAVE GRIEVED OVER THAT.. Jan … Thanks for the comment and I thought that was you in the cafeteria shot. I am glad that people seem to be enjoying looking at these photos that my father made for the PHS yearbook. Those years really meant a lot to him. I am also surprised of all the people that have commented on these photographs that I have not heard from or seen in 30 years or so. I have not done anything to advertise this site and the PNJ did an article on the blog back in August and I have gotten a good response from it. I am not much of a writer, but people have been kind and gracious to me so far about the goofy things that I write. Thanks again and please let me hear from you in the future … Frank
