Palafox Street Through the Years …1940’s to the 1980’s …
Here are several photos that I have of Palafox Street through the years. The first one is from sometime in the 1940’s I believe. It is a photograph that I scanned that I have had laying around for years. It has no real significance other that it is of the intersection of Palafox and Garden Streets …
If anyone has a date on this photo, please let me hear from you. The next one is from the 1950’s … it looks as if the Florida Theater was showing ” Gone With The Wind ” and people were lined-up waiting to get into the matinee.
Can anyone remember the ” Tiny Waffle ” Shop … that’s a new one on me. I know that I spent many a Saturday at the Florida Theater back in the 1960’s . Now we are going to jump forward to the 1980’s …
This is looking south down Palafox Street … the line of people waiting to get into the Florida Theater would have been standing on the left side of the frame. One more thing, I had posted a photo of James Cagney riding in the back of a car in a parade a while back … that photograph was made at this intersection here, Palafox and Gregory Street, and Hannah’s Pharmacy was in the background ( I do not know if you can recognize it in that photo, but that is it ) . I am not sure of the exact year that this was made, but I would guess that it would have been in the mid-1980’s. And finally, a photo right before the San Carlos Hotel was demolished …
And finally, we are back at the corner of Palafox and Garden Street … sometime 1985 or 86 or 87. I do not which one, but all I can say is what a big change! I hope everyone liked that look through the ages … I did not know if any of them were worth putting in a post by themselves, but run together they were sort of interesting. Played basketball for PJC and that’s where they put us
Was run down a bit at the time but was certainly a memorable year
The coach gave me a bag of bus tokens to ride back and forth to school

Thank you for posting these wonderful memories of Pensacola. I assume that the photographer Frank Hardy was your father. I have fond memories of him, especially at Suter School. He did our class photos, individual pictures, and our plays, if I remember correctly. I remember his kind and professional mannerisms, as he worked with the students. I also remember his studio on 12th Ave. across from the Sacred Heart Hospital, and with just down from the P & S Apothecary/Moultons Drug Store. Thanks again! PHS Class of ’68.

I loved seeing these old photos. I grew up in Pensacola, but have been living away for many years. My father worked in Hinote’s Barber Shop near the corner of Garden and Palafox. Do you remember that shop or have a picture of it?
I enjoy seeing all of your pictures all over the NET….

Robbie …. Thanks for your comment. Hinote’s Barber Shop sounds familiar, but I have never run across a photo of it. You might check with the old Pensacola Historical Society downtown across from Rosie O’Grady’s. Or try the UWF Historical Archieves in the basement of the John Pace Library. Don’t remember the Tiny Waffle Shop. What I do recall in that space was the Brass Lantern Restaurant. Downtown had some good places to eat, especially the Driftwood

Thanks for the comment … The Driftwood I remember very well and ate there many times. The Brass Lantern is sort of familiar, but nothing really jumps right out. That must have been before my time. It is a shame all of the old places that are no longer around, especially the Driftwood. Please check back … Frank

Thank you so much for posting these photos! I have enjoyed looking through them. I had no idea that Hannah Pharmacy had been in business that long and my Uncle used to live at the San Carlos Hotel. I remember the day they took it down.

Hannah’s Pharmacy was there on the corner for as long as I could remember … at least through the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. I do not know when they closed down and moved out, but it would be interesting to know. I wish someone would do a book on the the history of the San Carlos … talk about the famous people that stayed there, when it was built, etc. There might be someone that already has … I will have to check at the Pensacola Historical Society and I am sure someone could down there could tell me. If you know any stories from you uncle about living at the San Carlos and you want to share them here, please be our guest. Thanks again for looking and commenting … Frank

In the image looking south on Palafox at the Garden Street intersection, the building on the right I believe is the Blount Building. My childhood dentist was in that corner office on the third floor. Dr. Jones was his name.

Frank-thanks for your efforts-talk about bringing back memories-check out the r.c. cola sign on top of the building by the fla. theater-remember when they had a summer show for the kids at the saenger once a week-6 r.c. cola bottle caps would get you in and you could ride the bus there for $.25

Frank, thank you so much for sharing this treasure trove. (We may have had the same barber.) Your father’s work seems priceless now. It was only just a few years ago that I would see your Dad and Mom in their car at Ft Pickens pier area, out for an afternoon drive. Keep up the good work. PHS ’70.
