One More From 12th and Gonzalez Streets …
This is one more panorama made with the Wide-Lux 120 that my father owned. This is from the diagonal of the last pano showing Ginn’s and Kwik Chek on the south side of Gonzalez and 12th. The signs on the building say ” Shaws ” and ” M&M Hardware and Fishing Tackle ” . The business at the left end of the building was ” Friendly Service “. They had a deli that made sandwiches and had cold salads like potato salad, cole slaw, etc. They even had a hot bar that had meat loaf, cabbage, navy beans and the like. That business I remember very well because it did not close until the early 1980’s. This photo was made in the mid-1950’s, so you see that 12th Avenue was stilled paved with bricks.
Anybody out there that wants to share their memories of Friendly Service, Shaw’s or M&M Hardware and Fishing … please let us hear. I will ask you to refrain from talking about one item from Friendly Service … their meat-loaf sandwiches. To this day, that has to be my all-time favorite sandwich and I have never had one ( except from home ) that has been that tasty or delicious. Thanks again for looking and let us hear your comments.

Thank you Frank for finding and posting this picture. My uncle and father owned Friendly Service Grocery store. I have many fond memories of visiting the grocery store and my father would take me across the street to some little restaurant in the strip center where your father’s store was for pie and coffee while my mother would shop. I also remember they had a specialty food section with fried ants or fried grasshoppers – gross!
You are providing a great service publishing all these pictures.

Thanks for the comment and info Lucy … I saw Bob at Heyward’s funeral and talked for a minute. Dunc sent me his phone number the other day and I am going to call him up because I have several things I have found that I want to give him. Thanks for this memory – we use to run (and I mean run) after school from Clubbs Jr. High School down to Shaws (a long block) for a milkshake & run back just in time to catch our school bus home to East Pensacola Heights. Knew this road & nearby houses by heart!

My grandmother had a house on Bobe. At a young age, my cousins and I used to walk the couple of blocks to the store. Of course then, a quarter would buy a whole bag of candy. Then J’s Bakery opened and had us always coming back for more!

My grandfather was Frank Tally and he ran the deli at Friendly Service. I am pretty sure you ate one of his meatloaf sandwiches! He worked at Piggly-Wiggly before it closed and then moved to Friendly Service. He also worked at Sol Cohn before that.

Sue … I can vaguely remember your grandfather or the person that I think your grandfather was. There was an older man who was always around running the store when Jim Stringfield was not around and that is the gentleman that I am thinking of … this was in the late’70’s and early 80’s. I cannot recall his name, but it might have been “Frank”. I have done some work for a “Tally” family that lives off of Creighton Road and attends Olive Baptist Church, but that was 20 or so years ago. Thanks for the comment … Frank

The Piggly Wiggly at 1304 E Gadsden St.? PLEASE tell me you have some photos of that and the area I am searching the rest of my life for photos of that area. Especially 1221 E Gadsden, 13th and Gadsden and 13th and Cervantes. (The Candy Store, the Barber Shop…. ) 1960’s and earlier. Also Ms. Lennie Pate’s on Cervantes would be sweet.

Bill … Thanks for the comment. I have not seen any of the old Piggly Wiggly or of any of those addresses that you mentioned. You should go down to the Pensacola Historical Society downtown in the old ” Beacon ” building behind the TT Wentworth Museum. They have all of these photographs cataloged, which is something that I have not done and to be very honest with you, I doubt that it is going to be something that I am going to do in the next few years. If I run across any of these, you know that I will put them up. Thanks again … Frank

I went to the Historical Society. So far, You have more photos of anything in East Hill than they do. I was very disapointed. They have a seperate file for businesses, so on my next visit I am just going to start asking by business name, but the East Hill file was to thin. They didn’t even have much on schools in that area.

I think they have a lot, but it is cataloged differently. I believe that their system has to do with individual addresses, businesses and the individuals themselves … that is just my own observation looking up certain places, ie – Clubbs School, etc. Thanks for the comment … Frank

There was a barber shop at the end of this building on the right. It was Johnson’s Barber Shop. I got many hair cuts there as a child. Mr. Johnson had a stiff leg. We imagined it was a war injury. Bill Kreitlein

I have photographs of me getting my first haircut at Johnson’s Barber Shop … They are funny because I was crying and scared. I will have to find them and post them later. I remember that he had a barber that worked for him named Floyd Helms, I believe. Thanks for the comment … Frank

Hi Frank, I was a student nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital (1046-47) when Frank was X-Ray tech. and Moulton’s was a drug store on the corner. I think Frank was not married then and an eligible bachelor (lol). He was free lance photographer and when I quit school to marry he took my wedding pictures September 1947. We celebrate 65 years next month. My husband, Jim Crooke sang at many weddings during the years as Frank did the photography so he and Frank shared many good stories. Many fond memories there. He would be proud of what you are doing.

Theresa … That is correct, my dad did not marry my mother until 1950, so all of those years at the hospital he was single. I have a scrapbook of photos of these nurses on the beach made back in the 30’s and 40’s, but I have no names on them and no way of ever finding who they. I know of the Crooke family and think that there were at least 6 or 7 boys and 1 girl, if that is the Crooke family that I know. Tell me what your maiden name was, because I have a box of negatives from that year that I have saved … Thanks, Frank

Frank, my late husband, Norman DeWeese, would have absolutely loved this site. He was proud to say that he was third generation Pensacolian. He always enjoyed sharing Pensacola history with anyone who would listen. I bet he would have been able to offer some insight for some of your photos. Thank you for your posts. I will enjoy coming back often to see more.

Thanks for the comment, Bill. I knew that Moulton’s was on the end as a drug store … I never remember it ever being a hardware / fishing tackle store. But this was in the mid-50’s and I was only two or three at this time. Nice hearing from you and thanks for the comment … Frank
