Roger Scott …
This is a portrait of Roger Scott that my father made back in the 1950’s. I believe that Mr. Scott ran the Parks and Leisure Services Department for the City of Pensacola for many years. The City’s Tennis Center on Summit Blvd. is named for him. He was way before my time and I know nothing at all about him. Nice portrait of him at his desk.

Frank Hardy Made My Photographs Two 
This picture was a press photo of my Grandfather, Roger Scott, Sr. He was an outstanding man, loving grandfather. He helped guide many young people, urging them to attend college & often making contacts to help them win scholarships. ‘Grandaddy’ was a charismatic gentleman who looked out for others, especially persons who were in dangerous situations or who were persecuted due to race, bullying, & the like. He was a brave ‘man’s man’ who was the best Grandfather!

I was a friend of Mr. Scotts son Billy and we played baseball together at Pensacola High. I graduated in
1953. I met Mr. Scott several times and he was great

Thank you for your kind comment, Mr. Smith. I’m Roger Scott’s first grandchild, and my Dad was Roger Scott, Jr. We all miss Uncle Billy very much. He was taken from us far too soon. Growing up in the Scott family was great fun with many wonderful memories with our big clan! Frances Scott Coe

I am the grandson of Roger Q. Scott, Jr., and I’ll tell ya, the man died while I was young, but I remember his gaze, I remember his energy. This was instilled upon his son who was a friend, a roomate and still a grandfather. I have hours of his memories in my head and hours of organic chemistry, physics, life and love and various age differentiated stories of conflict and common sense over our lifetime. He taught me ethics of life from Roger Sr. Which I still utilize. He taught me to be tough and yet fair in all I do. Mostly, in this era, I find most to regard this as pipe dreams. However, convincing others can be a full time war and convincing myself can be self evident over years of familial sharing and experience. The man was better than me. I hope I can at least retain the grace and honest character that his prescence and genes passed on.

Alan … Thanks for the information. Someone had corrected me earlier and said that he had worked for Gulf Power, I had assumed that he had worked for the city of Pensacola. Here is more accurate information on Roger Q. Scott, Sr. Thanks for posting this great photo. Would it be possible to get a print made?
Roger Q. Scott, Sr. was employed by Gulf Power Company, where he advanced to Electrical Engineer
and Manager of Retail Operations. He retired from Gulf Power in 1959. He was involved in numerous civic organizations in Pensacola. He was a member of the Recreation Board for 20 years, serving as its chairman for many of those years. He also served as President of the Pensacola Sports Association, Chairman of the U.S.O. Board, President of the Lions Club, and the YMCA Board of Directors.
He was a member of the Ole Miss Alumni Association and First United Methodist Church.
According to an October 21, 1964 article written by the editorial staff of “The Pensacola Journal” (page 4A), Mr. Scott was considered to be, “a leader in laying the foundation for and expanding the excellent recreation program that is conducted by the city of Pensacola. It is fitting that the new tennis center on Summit Boulevard bears his name, for it will perpetuate the memory of one of a number of men who contributed interest, thought, time and effort to the well rounded program now in effect to strengthen and entertain young people. His going saddens many who knew him for his sterling character and his untiring
endeavors for others”. This was published shortly after his death.

Nancy … That is very interesting. I appreciate you taking the time to write all of that information. Like I said before, most of what I have been doing is guessing about these people and when I am wrong ( which is most of the time ) someone writes nd corrects me. Whenever I post a photo, I try to write something just so there will be more than just a photo, no matter how wrong I am, because I know there is someone out there that knows something. And usually everyone is happy to share the correct information with us … you can tell that just by the number of comments I have received over the last few days. Hi Frank,
This is my grandfather, Roger Scott. He did not work for Parks and Recreation, but for Gulf Power Co. He did a lot to promote sports, which is the reason the Athletic Field was named for him. I have more accurate and detailed information that I can send you later.
