A Few More Unknowns From Out West …Actually From Dallas Texas …
These two photos were found with the ones of Modesto California, so I would imagine that they were made somewhere near the Modesto area. Since I have never been to this area, nothing even remotely looks familiar. The old cars crossing the bridge into the ” big ” city makes this photo look interesting to me. Somewhere back, I posted a photo my dad made by a shore with boats and it looked to me to have been made on a lake … I wonder if this bridge might have been across that lake. I know that we might never know for sure, since my father died four years ago, but it is interesting to speculate. The next photo is downtown somewhere …
The ” Hotel Whitmore ” sign is sure prominent in this photo … I wonder if this could be downtown Modesto? Maybe that was the city off in the distance as you crossed the bridge? I am sure that some one out there might know the answer. It is interesting to look at the downtown photo and see all of the street-car wires suspended above the street. Could you imagine going to a city this large now and looking up and seeing all of those wires … I am sure there is still a city out there today that looks like this, but I sure have not seen one in years. UPDATE: Someone commented and said that these two images are of Dallas Texas. The image above is Commerce Street in downtown Dallas, because the Hotel Whitmore is still there. The image before is a skyline of Dallas coming across some … I do not know which one, but is anyone knows, please let us hear from you. Thanks … Frank
Frank Hardy Made My Photographs Two 
First picture is a old Dallas via duck bridge built in 1901 or 1906 , pointing toward east downtown Dallas, Texas. Second photo is a Commerce street pointing toward east. Hotel Whitemore and rest of those buildings are long gone. They are now turned into a car park or city park.

If your update stating that the Hotel Whitmore still exists is based on my comment, I want to clarify that, to the best of my knowledge, the Whitmore is long gone. although the building may still be there. (Interesting tidbit: The Hotel Whitmore has previously been owned by Warren Diamond under the name The St. George Hotel. Diamond was an infamous gangster who operated gambling operations out of the St. George and gave Benny Binion (Binion’s Horseshoe – Las Vegas) his start parking cars at the St. George.)

Bob … Thanks for the clarification. I will correct my post. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I am a photographer and not a historian. If I can get part of any history correct, I am pleased. I hope no one uses anything that is seen here on this blog as research for a doctoral thesis!! I am just happy that I can get any comments about any of my posts. Thanks for the gambling tidbit … I have never been to Las Vegas, but I have always heard of Binion’s Horseshoe Casino. Thanks again … any info I get is appreciated. Frank

The second photograph is Commerce Street, Dallas, Texas. Aside from the fact that the Hotel Whitmore was located on Commerce, the Pegasus (Flying Red Horse) seen in the skyline is the longtime icon of the Dallas skyline.

I just googled old Dallas skyline and there was a picture from the same bridge with a slightly different angle and a few different buildings.

I live in Modesto, currently, and that is definitely not Modesto. Their buildings are neither that tall or that old. Good luck.

Definitely not Modesto. Modesto never had buildings that tall. I googled Hotel Whitmore and there is a postcard of one that had a similar sign (like the Hotel Whitmore sign further down the street) in Dallas TX.
If you have more photos of Modesto I would love to see them. Thanks.

Richard – Thanks for the comment. I wish I had more photos of Modesto, because so many of the people that Google ” Modesto ” end up at my blog. I only found a roll or two that my father made on trips out west to see his sister in the 40’s and 50’s. Since the rolls were just loose in a film box, if it had not been for people looking at my blog, I would never have known where they were made. My father ( and me for that matter ) have lived our entire lives in Pensacola Florida, so most of what I have are photos that he made here in Pensacola and vicinity…I hope that explains the majority of the content on here.
