The Harbor View Restaurant …
The Harbor View Restaurant used to be in the old Municipal Auditorium at the foot of Palafox Street that was torn down at the end of the 1990’s to make way for the Plaza DeLuna. This restaurant was before my time … I believe it operated in the 1950’s and 60;s, but I am not exactly sure of the dates. And, I am not really sure who owned or operated the business. One thing that I can tell you just judging from this photo, the place must have been first class! I have found several other photos of the interior that my father made, however I could not put my hans on them now. When I do run across them again, I will set them aside and post them. Yes, the Harbor View was owned by Pete Geeker. He later opened the original Skopelos on West Cervantes Street. He would later take on a partner. That partner was Paul Silivos. Uncle Pete also owned the Childs Restaurant on Palafox. During the war he built and opened a restaurant called Wings on South Navy Blvd. In Warrington. He also owned the Anchor Bar and the Diamond Horseshoe Bar on West
Government. He was quite the entrepreneur.

Frank, I believe that the restaurant only operated for a couple of years, maybe only a year. I was speaking to Saenger staff some time ago before the Auditorium was shut down. According to them, the man who ran the restaurant had some sort of “Sweetheart” deal with the City at the time and the restaurant was built on the back just for him.

Johnnie – Thanks for the comment. Someone wrote earlier that Judge Geeker’s father owned and operated that restaurant. I do not know anything about a “sweetheart deal”. I do know that most of the successful restaurants at that time were operated by Greeks – I have never heard of a bad Greek restaurant. In fact, most of my favorite restaurants today in Pensacola are run by Greeks… Aegean Breeze, Nancy’s Haute Affairs which is Gus Silivos’ wife and also the Scenic 90 Grill. One could probably do a good pictorial history of Pensacola based on Greek restaurants. I can think of half a dozen good but no longer open examples just in my short time — Boy on a Dolphin, the Athenian on Gregory, the one that was on Palafox a couple of years ago for lunch (run by the former owner of Boy on a Dolphin, I think), Skopelos (The Silivoses again). And then of course there are the famous restaurants of years gone by — the Driftwood, etc. Was Martine’s Greek?

I would say yes … the Marks family owned Martine’s at the old ” Circle “. There were many other small restaurants in downtown Pensacola that were run by Greeks … The Florida Grill / Restaurant that was on Wright Street and Child’s Restaurant which was on Palafox that is now Intermission’s . I could be wrong on those two, but they do come to mind and I know that there were many others. In fact I remember reading somewhere that the majority of restaurants in Pensacola in the 30’s and 40’s were owned by Greeks. Thanks again for the comment …
