Frank Hardy Made My Photographs Two

Pensacola High School …

with 13 comments

I ran across this hand-colored postcard of the old Pensacola High School that was located off Palafox Street recently and thought that it was an interesting image.  I do not know who made the image, but since I have a few images that where made in front of the school, I just thought it would be interesting to show a photo of the school.  I know that the majorette photo was made on the front steps and I believe a band photo was made there.  Thanks for looking …

  2. We moved to Pensacola in June 1953 and I started as a junior in the “new” high school on A street. ’53 had been the last graduating class at the old school on Palafox.

    • Linda … Feel from give this web address to any of your friends. I am surprised of the people who have commented and viewed the site since the PNJ ran that nice article on my blog … it has really exposed this site to a lot of people that I would not have been able to, since I do not have any type of budget to buy advertising. I know that spending money on advertising is considered investing, but after losing our home in Ivan … I sure do not have any money left, it all goes back into the mortgage, insurance, etc. Thanks again and I hope that you can connect with some of your old high school cronies … Frank

    • Hi Linda, I attended and graduated from Tech. 1961. I went there from 1958 to 1961. I was fortunate to be here when the fire destroyed the beauty and great sch building. of my life and the wonderful teachers and student. lives. I never felt more at home than that wonderful place and people. I had to walk 23 blocks from “A” and Government Streets. to that wonderful place. I had Mrs. Turnage to help me cope and get through the hard life I grew up in. I attended Hallmark and Blount Jr. High. Those were great schools for children to grow up to besides Ferry Pass. My name is Wilhelmina Blocker Carroll, wcmina672@gmail.com. I went to several reunions but it seems nobody will organize another one. I sure enjoyed the ones I went to. I also, would like to find old classmates and have some fun times together again. I am single and retired. I just don’t know what retired people do. I sure hate being alone. I just don’t know what to do. I have 4 little dogs. My 2 granddaughters have grown up and I am not needed anymore. My son is to busy with his single life. Maybe I can hear from you and others to. I am glad I decided to check on the building. I saw in todays paper a man named James Kimberl graduated from Tech. But he was born in 1925. I didn’t know of another Tech before out Tech. So I have tried to check this out. Do you have any knowledge of another Pensacola Tech before ours. Hope to hear from you. Wilhelmina (Wilma). .

  4. Frank, I graduated from Pensacola High in 1953 and then went on to school at the same location that then
became Pensacola Junior College. The Gym was located at the rear of the school and the volleyball courts
were directly behind the school. I spent 3 gruelling years playing basketball under Coach Shorty Snead and
then for Coach Louis Ross when it became PJC.

    • Delmar, I wonder if you knew my sister, Katherine Anne Kreitlein, from the class of ’53? I, too, spent three grueling years playing for Shorty from ’56 to ’59. We could probably share funny stories about him. I live in Birmingham. Did you know Billy (Mullet) Renfro? Bill Kreitlein

  5. very cool that you posted this. I am completely fascinated with this building. I had been doing research on it for about 6 months now (actually longer). I have found several photos of the front, and very few from back and inside. I looked thru several Year Books at the Library, and re-read the articles about the fire March 1969. The building was complted in 1922. And PHS was there until 1953 so. Then it was Pensacola Junior College then Technical High School until it burned. An Beautiful Structure. Glad we still have P.K. Yonge which was built around the same time. They don’t build schools like this anymore.

    • Bill – Thanks for the comment and the history update on the building … I could not remember when it burned or when it was built. My father graduated from PHS in 1933 and I still have his diploma. I might scan or copy it and post the images later … the diploma itself is really interesting and I would consider it a work of art – nothing like the diplomas that are handed out today. I ran across the image of the old PHS building through a friend and thought that it would be interesting to show the entire building, since the photos that my father made were mostly of groups on the front step. Thanks again for the comment and history update on the building. Frank…
