The ” Round – House ” on Bayou Texar …
This is another photograph my dad made with the panoramic camera he owned – The WideLux. This house is still located on Bayou Texar, but I have no idea who lives in it today. The Lautner family used to live here back in the 1950’s and 60’s. Mr. Lautner was the builder of our house on Dunwoody Drive, which is just two blocks up from this house. I found some other images my dad made with the WideLux from this boat trip that I will post later. Note how there was a train track that would take their boat back and forth from Bayou Texar. I can not remember if it was motorized or if there was a pulley system to take the boat back and forth to the ” Round – House “, but whatever there was it left an impression on me. I dont know if you still read this section or not, but i am interested in knowing more about Ernest Lautner, the builder. I am a HUGE fan of john lautner, his cousin that designed the house. but you mentioned how ernest built your house on dunwoody (which are some awseome mid century homes in that area), and i am trying to find other homes that he built and almost every search online comes to john lautner. if you have any information on where i could look, i would be greatly appreciative.

I do not know much other than they built the home we lived in in Cordova Park. I have not seen David, the son, in 30 or years or so, not even sure if he is still alive. I was contacted by the brother’s group that does his archives and sent them some files. As usual, I had to give it to them. No money. Wish I could be more help. Maybe get in touch with the brother’s group in Atlanta and they could help. Good luck ….

I’m also a huge John Lautner fan looking for information on Lautner-built houses in the Pensacola area. In 2016, I purchased the Clarence & Virginia Taylor residence (built 1973) in Gulf Breeze. At the time, I knew it was designed by local architect Hugh Stanton Wright, but didn’t know anything about the builder. I was initially attracted to the house because it had some features reminiscent of the Sheats-Goldstein Residence, which is my all-time favorite example of 20th century American residential architecture. Last month, one of the Taylors’ sons provided me with the original blueprints for the house, and mentioned-almost offhand-that it had been built by a David Lautner. At the time, I had no idea that David Lautner was most likely kin to THE John Lautner! Anyway, if you’d like any information on this house, or if you have any info to share concerning other Lautner-built homes in the area, please contact me at josephjahearn at gmail dot com.

This house is still in the family and owned by grandson to Ernest Lautner the original owner and builder. The house was designed by Ernest Lautner’s cousin and contemporary American architect John Lautner who was an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright. Thanks … I only knew David Lautner and his family and obviously his mother and father who lived in the ” Round House “. I did not believe that David had any brothers or sisters. His mother and father were very nice … his mother used to have a big jar of sunflower seeds and she used to share them with me. I was only 6 or 7 and it was the first time that I had ever tried them and I enjoyed cracking the shell and getting out the “seed”. To this day whenever I eat a sunflower seed, I always think of Mrs. Lautner. I did not mean to wonder off there, but it is funny how the mind works … to me anyway. No, these are not all that I have … I probably have several hundred. These are just the few that I have posted over the last months. I plan on posting more in the future. I do have one of Tim and Ginger standing holding some trophies that they had one in some ski tournament that you can have … I was going to track down Ginger and give it to her, along with several other Bonifay photos / negatives that I have come across, but I will give them to you and you could get them to her. When I run across them, I will let you know and will get them to you. Thanks – Frank
